We had the good fortune of connecting with Selek Kae and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Selek, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I moved to Atlanta from NYC three years ago, no one really knew me as a DJ here yet I only played for House In The Park Recovery Party 2019 the year before Covid took us down. I wasn’t getting called for any gigs so I decided to ask DJ Yusef Terry & DJ Theo Hampton if they would like to collaborate on a Monthly Party hence Soul Variations was established two years ago.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from other is my Music Selections (hence the name Selectress MizzKae) I dare to play different I love introducing new tunes to the masses. I have two proud moments that stand out, me playing for Brooklyn Pride and opening for Osunlade. The DJ journey wasn’t easy for me because at this point and time everyone is a DJ a lot of competition I had to create my own lane, i’ve learned to have thick skin and ignore the naysayers and dodge the negativity.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
To be honest I’ve been living in Atlanta for three years now and I still haven’t explored this wonderful city at 100% but I woul take them to the Beltline, The world of Coca Cola, Centennial Olympic Park, Merces Benz Stadium and Skyview Atlanta. To party and have a few Cocktails would be Rocksteady, House In The Park Weekender, EL Malo, Westside Motor Lounge, and Gallery 992.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out DJ Tony Jakks for recommending me for this write up, Sammy Rock for allowing me to share my musical interpretation on his Internet Station Cyberjamz, My wife Miriam for daily encouragement and putting up with my musical anxiety 24/7 lol, Tariq Brodie for him Mentoring me for over 10 years, DJ Frankie Paradise for allowing a newbie at the time to play at his parties and naming me the First Lady of Soul Commitee (NYC) and to DJ Terrance Coleman for his guidance through the years most importantly all of my supporters.
