We had the good fortune of connecting with Savon/Robbie Gray/Dobbs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Savon/Robbie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It was actually a really simple process behind starting Black Business Boxes. It was the summer of 2020 and our country and specifically our state (Kentucky) were being highlighted for civil injustices. As the country pretty much caught on fire, we began to wonder if protesting in the streets was truly the best way to bring the changes we want to see?
We started researching and basically found out that a Black economy or Black WallStreet is almost the arch nemesis of America. Everytime one pops up, it disappears systematically. and we know that money controls the world, so if we want to take control of our world, we need to take control of our money.
We need to support Black-owned businesses, and what easier way than buying boxes full of different products from different businesses to introduce you to these amazing brands and allow you to take control of your purchasing power.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Savon: I currently work in the financial industry. This is not knowledge I gained in school or through life honestly, so getting to step into this industry has been a great help in life. Financial Literacy is one of the pillars that we must adopt in order to grow and evolve. This knowledge led to us starting Black Business Boxes, understanding the actual power of money!
Robbie: I do freelance photography, and video/production work. That is one of my passions outside of building a business from scratch. From initial conception of a project to post-production editing, I work on it all!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If we had a friend visiting Louisville first thing first, we’re getting some bourbon. Maybe hit a bourbon distillery in Bardstown, KY. we’ll get some fire Caribbean food at RoofTop Grill, Highland TapRoom and Lucretias Kitchen. If it’s summertime maybe we’ll hit Kentucky Kingdom our local amusement park, or head to the waterfront to catch a chill vibe.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We want to thank our families for supporting on after we made this crazy decision to start a business! Everyone who has supported us in any way. And everyone who is going to learn about Black Business Boxes by reading our interview in Shoutout Atlanta!
