We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Liddell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
To be honest, I always knew I would start my own business when the right moment and season in my life allowed for it. However, I tend to overthink everything in life, and this decision was no different. In 2017, I was in my Product Development class at FSU and my professor showed us the documentary ‘The True Cost.’ This film explores the dangers of fast fashion, and it opened my eyes to the importance of being a more thoughtful consumer. While still maintaining my love of clothes and fashion, I began to thrift more. Since day one, I have wanted to curate a place to share my finds with others. The easier that slow fashion is to consume, the less we lean on fast fashion. I sat on the idea of starting my own thrifting/vintage clothing business for years before I finally gained the courage to just take a leap of faith and do it. This moment came to me post COVID lockdown, when my work from home lifestyle turned back into me commuting to an office job that I didn’t have a passion for. This resulted in me daydreaming about what my life could be if I just started doing what I love. I am a firm believer that if you can’t stop thinking about it, that’s probably what you’re meant to be doing. So…I quit my full time job, found a part time gig that I love to help me pay the bills, and I spend all of my free time working on my business. My greatest motivator to achieve my goals for my business is that I am the one in driver’s seat. I’m the only one who can turn my dreams into my reality.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’m in my third month as an owner of a small business, and what I’ve learned so far is…this is the best decision I have ever made. I have met so many wonderful people, gained new skills, pushed myself creatively, and this is only the beginning. As I’m writing this, we are about to head into a new year. I have written down the things I plan to achieve with Two Pop in 2022, and man, am I excited for what’s to come. However, I still struggle with the narrative that “this has been done before.” What I try to constantly remind myself is that I have never done it before. I am bringing my own unique perspective and spin to the secondhand clothing world. It’s easy to get lost in negative self talk, and compare yourself to others, but it is so rewarding to do the hard thing and spin the comparison into inspiration. I’m excited to continue this journey and learn more each day.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta constantly has new things popping up, that’s one of my favorite things about this city. There are a few things that remain on my lists of “must do” when my friends and family come to visit. The first thing being walking the Beltline, and going into Ponce City Market to visit Citizen Supply. It’s one of the best ways to check out some of Atlanta’s amazing small businesses. After PCM, we’ll walk all the way to Hell Yeah Gluten Free to get some delicious treats. We’ve also got to get some local Atlanta coffee, and my favorites are Brash or Spiller Park. If we are wanting a bite to eat with our coffee, we’re definitely going to Muchacho to get the best breakfast tacos. When it comes to dinner, my new favorite spot is Amore e Amore, and I plan to take everyone who comes to visit out to eat there. My only regret in life is not trying out Amore e Amore sooner. If we’re able to fit all of that in, it’s a perfect trip!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am so lucky to be surrounded by the world’s most supportive friends and family, I wish I could sing everyone’s praises. However, I’ll do my best to keep it brief! My best friend, Maddy Haller, has helped me with so much with photoshoots and social media ideas. My boyfriend, Paul Jones, is also a small business owner (@happyhourtiedyes), and he has been such a great resource for questions and ideas. He also helps me curate the vintage, and haul everything to my pop up events. My childhood + lifelong best friend, Hannah Reese, was my very first customer the day I launched my website. My mom, dad, and sister have been so encouraging and supportive in this new endeavor (and every phase of my life.) I feel so fortunate to be so uplifted by my loved ones, especially in this season of my life.
