Meet Sara Mizrachi | Owner, Designer Sara Sela Jewelry

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sara Mizrachi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sara, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
It’s actually almost a strange thought; there being a process behind starting my business. It was such a natural step. By the time I walked into the courthouse to file my paperwork, I was about 18 years old and I had been selling for 5 years. It didn’t feel like the choice was anything but inevitable. I happen to love that about my story. I think it a rare and beautiful thing, taking my passion and creativity and making it real!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
For me, art is more than one thing. I have definitely enjoyed painting and sculpting, but for me, my self expression has always been in the form of jewelry(but sometimes in baking). I love mixing colors and textures to create something pretty to look at. I honestly don’t always look at my jewelry as material objects but a way to my thoughts tangible and coincidentally make them a cool fashion accessory. Recently I have been challenging myself to work a little harder. I am moving my designs into the world of Faire and I am learning how to balance my love for custom creations and larger lines. It has been a really good exercise in focus in all aspects of my business! I still want to be known for small batch, unique pieces but open myself up to larger opportunities.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love living in Chicagoland! There are endless little parts of the city and I have only begun exploring them. One of my newest adventures has been to Albany Park where I now sell at Urban Market Collective. It is a really cool area, diverse, artsy. I also love Evanston which is super supportive of small business so there are local shops galore and everyone has a strong sense of community.
Next on my list is Highland Park. It is so gorgeous there!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are a good handful of people who have supported me and continue to do so. From my parents who encouraged my creativity to my husband and even my kids(who definitely love mommy’s shiny, sparkly things), I have been very lucky to have them in my life. They have taught me how to focus, how to balance and also let me find my own way.
Over the last few years I have been a member of a PR group, The Artisan Group, and they have had a major impact on me as well. They are an incredibly supportive group, we root for each other and celebrate each other’s business successes and try to help each other through our hardships.
Lastly Monica Little, a business coach and mentor who has been helping me take my business to the next level and beyond!
