We had the good fortune of connecting with Sapphire Phoenix and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sapphire, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born in Germany, but raised in Saint Louis, Mo. I grew up in a loving two parent household. Once I got to middle school my view of the world changed fast. I was bullied and harassed daily to the point of attempted suicide by Freshman year of high school. Music saved my life.I didn’t have a voice then, but I’ve been able to write and create songs expressing my pain and sharing my experiences. My upbringing has created a resilience in me. It’s not something to brag about. Resilience isn’t a compliment. Truth is I’m exhausted, but music fuels me. Today, I am strong, intelligent, beautiful inside and out, and driven. I am overwhelmed by the love and support I’ve received since the release of my first single “Distraction”. I will continue to inspire others and impact their lives through my music.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My versatility sets me apart from others. You can’t place me inside of any box. I will surprise you. I have a strong gospel and choir background, but I love pop, rock, reggae, rnb, and neyo soul. I intend to make music in all genres. I dedicated myself to a inspirational group, GEM Artist, for over a decade that prepared me for life as a solo artist. Today, that very group continues to support me and we are closer then ever before. Nothing about the journey has been easy. Being an independent artist is a gamble. Financially, it’s a risk, but I believe that I will be successful so I make the sacrifices. I’ve learned not to be so trusting with people in the industry, but to always trust myself. I want the world to know that I, Sapphire Phoenix stand for rising above. Rising above all adversities, pushing past pain, and using it for good. If knocked down, Rise again! If you know the story of the Phoenix, then you know what I stand for. I know I am just as good as any other main stream artist and when given the right opportunity, I will show the world why I deserve to be there too, most humbly of course!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In Saint Louis, I enjoy Chinese food at Lisa Chop Suey in Jennings, White castles, and Imos Pizza. Tower Grove and Forest Park are my two favorite places to take a walk. The City Museum is my go to place for fun. Downtown and The Delmar Loop provide many different places to have a good time.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shout out my daughter, Jordan. She’s been there with me through it all, personal and business. She’s the reason I chase this dream and she’s the reason I choose life. Huge shout out to Elijah Neeley and Ben Chandler. They have been the constant behind the scenes support for me throughout my music journey. Two of the most talented artist and musicians in Saint Louis. I am their biggest fans and forever grateful to them both.
