Meet Sandie Mazzi | Interior Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sandie Mazzi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sandie, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I think of work life balance as whatever division that brings the most peace in my life. Before I had my daughter while I was still building up my company, I would sometimes work late or on weekends when I got to focus on designs without the distractions of phone calls or emails. Back then, even with the occasional Saturday that I worked, I still felt I had work life balance. But now, with a 3 year old, I’ve had to set firmer boundaries about when I can work. Evenings and weekends, I’m solely mama, not a designer who runs her own business.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Starting my own business was not easy, but having worked in a couple of firms in New York City, large and small, I knew I wanted to start something on my own. I had just moved to Atlanta at the time and decided to take the leap of faith. I didn’t know anyone, though I was a designer for this company called Homepolish (now closed), they connected clients to designers, so they helped me get my first clients here in Atlanta. It took years of ebbs and flows for me to really establish a client base here.
The thing is, I went to school to be a designer, not a business woman, so I had to learn how to run a business through lots of trial and error. I’d like to say it took months to figure it out, but it took me years and the learning is still ongoing. Marketing myself was also a challenge for me, I’ve learned that while talent can make you a good designer, sucess will only come if you know how to market yourself and run a solid business. Amazingly, working on my business has not only benefitted me, it made for a better experience for my clients, too.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love exploring the restaurants on Buford Highway, there are lots of hole-in-the-wall restaurants there with amazing food. My husband and I also love doing walks/hikes on one of the many trails in and around Atlanta.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, Rad, has been amazing supportive throughout this journey. The wonderful group of designers I met through Design Collective (it’s since closed) has also helped me get acquainted with the design community here in Atlanta.
