We had the good fortune of connecting with Sam Chong and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sam, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risks can be defined in many ways depending on who you’re asking. For me, taking risks can look a lot like taking on a challenge. While I may fear the unknown or hesitate making certain decisions, I tell myself that taking risks will move me towards where I am meant to be, or help me realize what isn’t right for me. After graduating college in Vancouver, Canada, I found myself craving for a change in pace of life. I accepted a position doing full-time photography in NYC without even knowing all the basics of photography and really doubting my photography skills. It was definitely scary yet exciting, but I am so glad I took that risk because my journey and experience with photography would not be where it is today without the initial experience. In fact, my life would have looked completely different! While I started out doing food photography, more recently I made the switch to pursue couples and portrait photography because the work resonated more closely with my vision and passion. It made me step out of my comfort zone and there is a whole new learning curve. I really look forward to where this path will take me. I believe risk taking is for everyone, and there are lots of big and small ways we can incorporate taking risks and challenges in everyday life. You can even start by trying out a new restaurant, visit a place you’ve never been, switch up your wardrobe colors. You’ll discover something new. When presented with a risk or challenge, do it anyways so you won’t have to spend time wondering the what-ifs.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love discovering different things to do and eat in Atlanta and especially love giving recommendations! Instead of week long, let’s say you had one day in Atlanta – I would start my day grabbing coffee at either Bellwood Coffee or East Pole Coffee, then head to brunch at Bread & Butterfly or Buttermilk Kitchen for a hearty southern brunch. Big Softie is a must if you love soft serve as much as I do, check out their rotating vegan flavors! I would then grab happy hour oysters at The Optimist and head to Buford Highway for dinner. There are so many restaurants in Buford Highway to choose from. Some of my favorites include Mamak (because my family is Malaysian) and Stone Bowl House. For things/activities to do, I love walking and while Atlanta is not exactly walkable, you’d be surprise with all the parks and trails Atlanta has to offer. If you’re staying within the city, you really can’t go wrong with Piedmont Park and The Beltline. Summerhill and Virginia-Highland District are fun neighborhoods I enjoy wandering around as well.
