We had the good fortune of connecting with Sadie Burbank and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sadie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I would summarize the process behind starting Space By Sadie with one word: passion. Upon learning that my grandfather ran his own interior design firm and then watching my father run his own interior design firm, I knew I wanted to carry on the family legacy. My mother was also an interior designer, specializing in kitchens, so I believed from a young age that I had inherited an eye for design. Any space that I enter I am constantly thinking of ways to move around furniture or change the color palette to create a fresh perspective and relax the mind.

What should our readers know about your business?
Space By Sadie was officially established two years ago, but I feel that my business has been on a path for over 10 years. I remember when friends, family, people I just met would ask me for advice: Where should I hang this? What do you think of this color? For a long time I gave this advice away for free thinking I was simply helping someone in need. I have come to learn that this is true, but that I also possess a rare talent. The ability to make spatial decisions and exercise creative control is something not be taken for granted. We do not always value creatives with income or social praise in our society but we should. I have learned to be confident in the services that I offer. I enjoy collaborating with my clients, making the design process more affordable and stress free, and ultimately making people smile!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a native of Atlanta, I am incredibly proud of the many cultural experiences our city has to offer. I would probably start at a favorite coffee shop in Old Fourth Ward, Chrome Yellow, and then proceed with a walking tour of Inman Park. The Archive Atlanta podcast does a great job at explaining the detailed history of various Atlanta neighborhoods. Of course we would need to stop by the Sweet Auburn District on the way to see the home of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the iconic Ebenezer Baptist Church. The history of our city is so rich and with an ever changing climate of real estate and development, I think it’s important to learn how things started.

Another day might include a walking tour of Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta’s oldest and first cemetery, followed by lunch at Nick’s Gyros near The Capitol and a quick sighting of the 1996 Olympic rings on Capital Ave. We would most definitely end up at Little Bear in Summerhill for dinner followed by a sweet treat at Big Softie or Little Tart. Last but not least, a trip to the High Museum is always on my list and a show at the historic Fox Theater after would wrap up the perfect day!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout goes to four very important influences on my life and on my small business today. Firstly I would like to thank my mother, Donna, and my father, Doug, for encouraging me to travel, to absorb my surroundings, to express creativity at every turn and to treat others with kindness. My true grit along with my desire to show people a world influenced by the history of design comes from you mom and dad; thank you. Secondly I would like to give credit to two small business owners and very close friends, Kristin Fedyk of Inland Venice and Alberto Hernandez of Meshika Hats. I met these unique trailblazers in Los Angeles decades ago and ever since they have encouraged me to be 100% myself while both exhibiting a real journey to small business success.
