We had the good fortune of connecting with Sabrina L. Donegan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sabrina L., do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
What is your Why? Does the business align with your values and passion? Are you willing to invest your time, talent and treasure?
These are the questions I would ask someone who wanted to know when they should give up or not. I remember a time I wanted to give up on my business because I wasn’t making the money I wanted to make. I remember giving up on my business because the challenges of entrepreneurship were overwhelming during my initial grieving season. It is your why that bring you back from those places of wanting to give. It’s your passion that says it’s worth sacrifice. Take a minute to remind yourself why, pray about strategies and show up consistently.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have a master’s degree in Christian Counseling. certification in both life/executive functioning coaching and a bachelor’s degree in Social Work. I bring with me six years of mental health crisis management, seven years of educational life coaching, and four years of leadership development. I work to support, inspire and partner with individuals in embracing and living a life of gratitude after grief & trauma as an author, Life Coach, Speaker.
I know firsthand the impact grief and trauma has on one’s ability to find moments of gratitude. At the age of 3, I witnessed my father be taken to prison and then later die from HIV and End stage renal disease. At the age 13, my sister drowned in my presence and at age 30 my mother passed away suddenly from cancer. In addition to the experience of abortions, legal struggles, depression and suicidal ideations, I am a first-generation college student who had to navigate the world academia alone. Four years after the death of my mother, I am a 2x self-published author, where I inspiring others to live a life of gratitude after grief and trauma by preparing for grief, surviving grief overcoming grief .
My journey was not an easy one. We were never promised an easy life. We were promise that through God would always be with us. It has been through my relationship with, friends and intense therapy that I was able to overcome the challenges of life. I believe that what sets my brand apart is my experience. I’ve been through grief and trauma. My clients do not have to worry if I will understand, I do. It’s those experiences that have led me here today.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite spots to eat in Atlanta is Tassili’s Raw Reality. Although it’s a vegan eatery, I promise it’s worth the try.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
As a believer in Jesus Christ, my first shoutout would be to God. It was in the dark valleys filled with night of sorrow, that I was given the words for my books and the desire to coach others during their own grieving process. When I often said no, it was it was his yes that brought me here today.
Secondly, my mom. She was my biggest supporter in always following my dreams and forging my own path in life. I knew that with her pushing me, the sky was the limit.
Thirdly, I would give a shoutout to my college counselor. It was her perseverance and gentle challenging that showed me what happens when you dig in instead of giving up.
