We had the good fortune of connecting with Roy Pope, Ph.D. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Roy, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I am originally from a small town in an impoverished area of Mississippi. My mother instilled in, all of us, the value of education and hard work. That strong background of hard work and my passion for education is what drives me to always try to give back.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have over 28 years of experience in the education sector. I received awards as a school principal for excellent student achievement and awards in the business sector such as one of the top American CEOs and Professional Development Expert of the Year. I am most proud of all the students I have assisted over the years in receiving a quality education. I am further proud of all the teachers who trusted me along the way and believed in our vision and who now subscribe to our educational company platform, EdGuru. What sets me apart is that I believe that anything can be learned. I remember when I wanted to know about Einsteins Theory of Relativity. I read different materials until I had a firm understanding of it. Again, hard work was instilled in me and my siblings so that level of hard work is what has also assisted in getting me to where I am today. It is very common for me to start my day at 2AM which supports my belief in hard work. Every failure teaches us a lesson on how to improve. I want the world to know that our company was built by educators for educators.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We live outside the US currently, so we have a few suggestions. We would suggest starting with the Burj Khalifa which is the tallest building in the world. After so many years, it still amazes us. Secondly, we would suggest a desert safari. It is a beautiful experience to camp out in the desert and barbecue. Lastly, we would suggest taking a cruise through Dubai. The views are beautiful, especially at night. There are so many exciting places in the UAE. If looking to travel to other countries, we would suggest the UAE, Canada, Finland, Estonia, Sweden and many more.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A person I would like to recognize is my wife Carisa Barry-Pope, PhD. Her support and encouragement motivates me further to want to excel in creating a company that would add value to the world. She has won many awards as well such as “Principal of the Year” and “Chief Operating Officer of the Year”.
