We had the good fortune of connecting with Rochelle Cao and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rochelle, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
Never be afraid of asking questions or for help. People are nicer than you think.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My name is Rochelle Cao, I’m a lighting and compositing artist in the film industry. I have participated in some TV series and films, like West World, The Color Purple, One Piece, Resident Alien, etc…I love what I’m doing now because I’m always amazed by how lighting changing makes different moods of an environment and I also like to see people can’t tell what’s CG and what is live-action when they see my projects. Plus, seeing my name in the theater is always been my dream since I was a kid. And it’s never been an easy way for me. I think the hardest part is not the art itself, it’s the external factor. As a foreign artist in the US, we get more different to survive because of some Visa restrictions. So the hardest part for me is how to deal with the pressure it brings to me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I will probably have lunch with my friend either in Ponce city market or Krog Street Market and walk along the Beltline, have a coffee around there, and take them to cabbage town to see the cool graffiti.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I think I am pretty lucky in some ways. Although I have encountered a lot of obstacles, I have also received brunch of help, support and encouragement in the way I chase my dream. My family’s support is definitely the most important part of my life. And some professors in the college also gave me a lot of support and encouragement. They helped me to discover what I’m really talented in, also they encouraged me to see things from different perspectives that I never thought of. Also, I’m grateful that people I have worked with were nice to me, and gave me some really helpful advices.
