We had the good fortune of connecting with RicXh Rubato and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi RicXh, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
I would say my most important decision other than to start my business has been the consistent decision to learn modify and grow in my industry. I can’t remain stagnant and I can’t think that I know my customer better than my customer or client knows themself.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In my craft as a DJ I flex my creativity through the style of my show. I like to cut, scotch, and mix different songs and genres. Literally the word “Rubato“ means to change tempo. I like to think I live up to my name during my shows if I’m mixing different song types or tempos really well. I actually took a little over seven years practicing in my bedroom after what was my day job of selling cars before I ever told anyone I was a DJ. I think all that preparation gave me the confidence necessary to finally step out and do things in a more permanent way . When I started I was just looking at the craft as a hobby and in all honesty if it wasn’t for the continued cost of new software and equipment in order to learn new abilities I would’ve never thought about the need to get some money back from displaying what I can do as a DJ . As a result, I’ve been able to find a full-time business out of a hobby I have a great passion for. Honestly it’s a blessing. Almost none of this has been easy. From finding out how to get gigs to finding out how to get my software and systems to communicate reliably, this entire experience has been a deep learning curve. But at the end of it all it’s been a pleasure to feel like I’ve been able to rise to some difficult occasions. The biggest lesson that I’ve learned is that perseverance is the key. I have not been as lucky as I have worked hard but in the end it all balances out. What I’ve done is consistently put myself out there and try to figure out different ways to adjust to the market. Especially when the pandemic hit hard and gigs were near impossible to find. That’s actually when I landed a permanent gig for the first time and I’m still there today. The only thing I could ever ask the world to know about my brand and my story is that it’s genuine. So even if my shows sometimes come across as related to one thing or another, my brand and my style and my craft are truly a part of me. If you want to experience what it’s like to live my life listen to the way I DJ.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
OK so if it’s a weeklong trip… Let me think… On day one we’re going to get all the classic stuff out the way like Woodruff Arts Center, Fernbank and the CNN center. On day two we start hitting up some of these nice restaurants in areas that people don’t necessarily come to Atlanta to see like little five points or maybe Ponce city roof… even Lindbergh has some really nice restaurants. By day three we’ve got to go maybe visit château Elon and get some good wine. By day four I know we’re going to hit some of the local attractions like the big Ferris wheel downtown or maybe sundial restaurant just so we can say we did it and take a picture in front of that Atlanta bridge downtown and see all our architectural design downtown. By day five which should be Saturday or maybe even Friday we’ve got to visit the Martin Luther King Center. I would want that to be close to the end of the trip so that you leave with a little bit of history and heritage but at the same time by that night that’s when the strip clubs start popping off so we definitely gotta do either like Magic city or may be club Blaze. By days six and seven it’s an all out party where we just move from club the club like Compound, Locura, Peacock, or maybe king of diamonds and even a visit Tokyo Vanity for a walk-through just to see how different people can be in Atlanta. Yeah that’s my ultimate week in Atlanta, and of course we’ll do some of the regular stuff throughout the day like visit some classic areas like Bankhead all parts of the Westside really go out to the Eastside Flat Shoals or Candler Rd. and you know because I’m from the south side we’re definitely gonna be around Old Nat and even University Avenue and Metropolitan to maybe get some JJ’s or one of those spots .

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother. Without her support, even though it’s reluctant, I wouldn’t be anywhere in this world. That’s just facts.
