We had the good fortune of connecting with Renelle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Renelle, how do you think about risk?
I used to be very afraid to take risks and have played most things safe in my life to a certain extent. It’s only been until this year, 2021 that I’ve started associating risk with reward. I took a few steps with my business trying things that were outside of my comfort zone (popup shops) and was greatly surprised at the turnout and it did wonders for my confidence when it comes to sales and putting myself out there more. What led me to the idea that I needed to take more risks was having a partner who loves to take risks and it inspired me to try it for myself.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’m the owner and operator of an eyewear brand that offers high quality, limited edition sunglasses. Most styles are 1 of 1’s or we carry no more than 5 of a particular style. The core and main purpose of the brand is to get people aware or to honor their authenticity. At a time when so many people look like others around them it’s cool to have a piece that brings the focus back to our individuality and unique styles. I started Donna Marie Frames in 2018. The company is named after my mother. I wanted a classic name that could be around for a while. Also honoring how my mother provided me with the room to explore and try things without judgement when I was younger. It’s a freedom I still carry with me to this day and it definitely shows up in my style. Sunglasses have always been my favorite accessory since I’ve been able to shop for myself. I love watching how as I learn to take more chances in life my business grows. It’s been exciting and interesting watching how close personal development is tied into business development. Being able to slowly but surely watch the growth happen over time keeps me excited for what else is in store for me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Honestly I’m a homebody, but if I had a friend come in from out of town and wanted me to show them around the city I’d definitely suggest the Atlanta aquarium or Six Flags. The Painted Pin, Ponce City Market, or Pin and Proper for activities and drinks, Inman Park or Peters Street for light food and drinks. Maybe one of the few African spots on Buford hwy for music and a night out.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to dedicate my shoutout to my husband and family who have supported and assisted me when I really needed it. And also to the book that had a major impact on me, The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle.
