Meet Rashonda Harris | Founder & CEO

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rashonda Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rashonda, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting my own business, Purple Sheep Consulting, was both a strategic and deeply personal decision. After decades of experience in research administration, I saw firsthand the challenges institutions faced in navigating compliance, optimizing operations, and developing their research enterprise. I knew I had the expertise to make a greater impact beyond a single institution, and I wanted to create a boutique consulting firm that provided customized solutions rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
Beyond the professional motivation, I’ve always believed in building something of my own—a space where I could integrate my commitment to Dialogue, Empathy, and Impact (DEI) into the core of my work. This means fostering meaningful conversations, understanding the unique challenges faced by institutions and professionals, and delivering solutions that drive lasting change.
I also wanted flexibility and autonomy in how I deliver services, ensuring that institutions receive tailored strategies and that professionals in the field have access to training and mentorship that empowers them. My thought process was driven by a mix of purpose, passion, and the recognition of a real need in the industry—one that I knew I could fill with integrity and excellence.
At its heart, Purple Sheep Consulting is about impact—helping institutions streamline research administration while also uplifting professionals who, like me, are navigating and redefining their careers in this space.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
About Purple Sheep Consulting: Setting a New Standard in Research Administration
Purple Sheep Consulting isn’t just a business—it’s a movement. When I founded it, my goal was to create a boutique consulting firm that provides customized, high-impact solutions for research administration. What sets us apart is our personalized approach, deep industry expertise, and a commitment to Dialogue, Empathy, and Impact (DEI)—ensuring that every client receives strategic guidance that aligns with their institutional goals and values.
I am most proud of how Purple Sheep Consulting has grown into a trusted resource for universities, research institutions, and professionals seeking expert support in sponsored programs, compliance, and operational efficiency. I’m also incredibly excited about our new initiatives, including a certification prep program for research administrators, the launch of “Purple Sheep Diaries” podcast, and our mentorship and professional development programs designed to empower Black women and underrepresented professionals in this field.
The Journey: Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Growth
Getting here wasn’t easy. Starting my own business meant stepping out of the comfort of a traditional career and embracing the uncertainties of entrepreneurship. One of the biggest challenges was building a brand in a highly specialized industry while ensuring that institutions understood the value of outsourcing research administration expertise.
I overcame these challenges through strategic networking, relentless perseverance, and a commitment to delivering results. Word-of-mouth referrals, client success stories, and my dedication to excellence and authenticity have been key drivers in establishing Purple Sheep Consulting’s reputation.
A major lesson I’ve learned along the way is that growth requires adaptability. Whether it’s navigating industry shifts, expanding service offerings, or adjusting to client needs, I’ve realized that staying relevant means continuously evolving.
What I Want the World to Know
Purple Sheep Consulting isn’t just about compliance and research administration—it’s about empowering professionals, reshaping the industry, and ensuring institutions thrive. Our mission is rooted in equity, education, and excellence, and we take pride in being more than just consultants—we’re partners in success.
If there’s one thing I want the world to know, it’s that success isn’t about fitting in—it’s about standing out. I built Purple Sheep Consulting to challenge norms, break barriers, and create opportunities for those who have historically been overlooked. And that’s exactly what we’ll continue to do.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I firmly believe that no success story is written alone. My journey—both personally and professionally—has been shaped by the mentorship, support, and encouragement of so many incredible people and organizations.
First and foremost, I dedicate my shoutout to my husband, Mumea, whose unwavering support, love, and belief in me have been a cornerstone of my success. His encouragement through every challenge, his patience, and his constant reminder that I am capable of achieving anything have meant the world to me. Alongside him, my daughters and family have been my foundation, providing love, inspiration, and motivation to keep pushing forward.
Professionally, I owe immense gratitude to my mentors and colleagues in research administration—the leaders and peers who have guided me, challenged me, and helped shape my expertise. Organizations like NCURA, SRAI, COGR, and FDP have provided platforms for growth, leadership, and networking that have been invaluable in my career.
I also recognize the communities of Black women professionals and entrepreneurs who have inspired me and reinforced the importance of Dialogue, Empathy, and Impact (DEI) in my work. Their resilience and brilliance remind me why I’m passionate about mentorship and advocacy.
Lastly, I want to give a special nod to the books, educators, and lived experiences that have expanded my perspective. Books like The Memo by Minda Harts and Lead from the Outside by Stacey Abrams have reinforced my belief in owning my space, using my voice, and creating opportunities for others.
So many people and experiences have shaped my path, and my success is truly a collective achievement. I carry their lessons and encouragement with me every day, paying it forward through Purple Sheep Consulting and the work I do to uplift others.
One of my most recent and deeply personal accomplishments is the release of my book, Purple Harvest: Planting Goals, Growing Truths, which launched on January 11, 2025 (1/11)—a date intentionally chosen to align with new beginnings and manifestation.
Why I Wrote It
This book is more than just a collection of thoughts—it’s a blueprint for transformation. I wrote Purple Harvest to help individuals set intentional goals, embrace their truths, and cultivate a life of purpose and impact. As someone who has navigated challenges in career, leadership, and entrepreneurship, I wanted to share a real, authentic, and empowering guide to success—one that doesn’t just focus on external achievements but also on inner growth and resilience.
What Readers Can Expect
The book blends personal storytelling, strategic goal-setting exercises, and mindset-shifting insights. It challenges readers to:
Define their purpose and goals with clarity
Break through self-doubt and imposter syndrome
Leverage their unique experiences as strengths
Use Dialogue, Empathy, and Impact (DEI) to create meaningful change
Embrace success on their own terms
I also integrated reflection prompts, practical tools, and Purple Truths—powerful lessons I’ve learned along my journey in leadership, research administration, and business.
What Makes It Special?
Purple Harvest isn’t just another motivational book—it’s a call to action. It’s designed to help professionals, entrepreneurs, and leaders take ownership of their journey without waiting for permission. The title reflects the idea that the seeds we plant today—our goals, values, and efforts—become the harvest we reap in the future.
What’s Next?
I’m incredibly proud of this book and excited about its impact. To expand on its themes, I’ll be:
Hosting workshops and speaking engagements based on Purple Harvest
Incorporating it into Purple Sheep Consulting’s mentorship programs
Discussing its key themes on my upcoming podcast, Purple Sheep Diaries
This book is just the beginning—I see it as a movement to encourage people to step into their power, embrace their uniqueness, and create a lasting impact in their industries and communities.
Final Thought
If I had to sum up Purple Harvest in one sentence, it would be:
“Your truth is your power, and the goals you plant today will shape your future success.”
