We had the good fortune of connecting with Raquel M R Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Raquel M, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
Giving up is simply never the answer. The race is never over if you still have life. You may struggle and experience lost along the way but there is always a chance for a comeback. Life has its bumps and bruises as does business but every bump and bruise there is a lesson to be learned. A lesson that is preparing you for your greater. So, giving up is never an option. The real focus must be what’s ahead. What are you driving toward and how will you get there? The key is waking up each day and doing the work knowing that it’s not going to be easy or given. Giving up is not an option.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For many years I sat aside my creative being. I focused on running my businesses and the things that made me money to take care of my family. Over the years I have been blessed financially which has allowed me to focus heavily on my creative writing. I am an eight time published author but my dream is to write for TV and some day have my featured film on screens around the world. In all of my businesses and now my writing I have taken the same approach. I’m never afraid to do the work and I am always a student. None of what I have achieved has been easy but it has all been worth it. I am not afraid to take risk and stand alone if I may. I know what is on the other side of believing in yourself and chasing your dreams. That’s the cool thing about dreams you are never too old to chase them or catch them. What I want the world to know about my brand and me is this ” I am not defined by society, but yet by the total being that I am. My spirit is free, and my sexuality is mine to give meaning too. Given life into this world by two crack pipe smokers; an only child raised in the 80s, the AIDS and crack epidemic where I found a way to escape into the many stories created silently while suffering from an internal pain”. The only thing that sets me apart from others is my ability to keep fighting and I never give up. I bet on me every time. I’m excited about giving my writing 100% of me because the possibilities are limitless.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spot is my restaurant and bar The Gold Den! When I’m not writing and teaching I’m at my bar. When my friends come to town The Gold Den is a must visit! The spot is a vibe, great food, smooth RnB music with a touch of Hip Hop but most important it has an atmosphere that makes you feel like you are in a place that has class. We offer a variety of events throughout the month ranging from jazz musician’s, live entertainment, comedy, poetry, open mics, karaoke, networking events, book signing and more. We also have the best bartender and cook in town. Outside of my restaurant and bar I love to catch a good movie! I’m one that loves to relax when their is time in my schedule.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, I need to shout out God! He is a provider and continues to blow my mind at every turn in my life and career. To those that have supported and support my businesses thank you. To my circle of sisters and brothers that encourage me and fill me up when I am empty I thank you because without you refueling my tank I would not be able to do what I do. To my children, every time I look at you I fight harder for our legacy, your legacy. I thank you for your warm hugs and kisses that are timely every time you approach me to share your love. Mommy loves you so very much. To my Life Coach/Bonus Mother you have been instrumental in my mental health and pushing me to new heights. I thank you for pouring into me. It requires a village, none of us can do it alone. To my tribe thank you.
