We had the good fortune of connecting with Rae Reeves and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rae, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
Seeking ways to improve has been the single most important decision that has contributed to my success. It has to start from the ground up. Innovation does not mean that you have to have the best ideas. All it means is brainstorming those ideas, products or services and elevating them to the 10th power.

Over the course of the last 3 months, I have taken the liberty to enroll in professional development courses, attend workshops, network with like industry experts and apply for certifications so that I stay on top of trends.

Part of that is performing consumer research, which has helped me find pain points and areas of improvement. For example, client feedback and suggestions are taken into great consideration when thinking of fresh, fun, yet deliverable methodologies. This does not always come naturally but being observant and open to change is the inspiration in itself.

Consistent innovation is the key to Resumes by Rae’s success.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

I am currently raising funds to enroll in The Nationally Certified Résumé Writer Certification (NCRW) course and sit for the exam. To reassure my clients that they are receiving a professional, tried and true, reputable experience, I am setting forth on this certification process to truly round out the final résumés that Rae produces. Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

I’d like to spotlight black owned businesses in Queens. These are on my itinerary:
  • Essential Kitchen is the first commercial kitchen and business incubator in Southeast Queens owned by Dianna Rose. Here, we can tour the facility that offers state of the art equipment to cooks, bakers and culinary artists looking to grow their business.
  • GameStation is an arcade and event venue located in Queens Village owned by U.S. Marine Corps veteran Ricardo Ricketts. I’m always down for game nights and open play!
  • At Earnest Foods, Queens first organic supermarket, we can find an array of health foods and products.
  • Queenz Bakery Cafe in Jamaica, NY has by far the best patties I’ve ever tasted!
  • To destress, we have to book Elmont-based Miller’s Mobile Massage. Natasha “delivers comfort to your doorstep” with a smile and dynamic energy.
  • A tandem personal training session with Flash Fitness by Daniel Farray is necessary to let off some steam.
  • I love a good, strong coffee with hearty accompaniments in a quaint, calm, beautifully decorated restaurant. Standard Pour Espresso & Wine Bar in Valley Stream offers just that.
If there’s time, a couple hours at Resorts World (NYC’s only casino) wouldn’t hurt. Cha-ching!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. My family, especially my daughter Aminah. The BlaQue Resource Network, Mom Mob Worldwide, and my lovely clients have been instrumental to the success of Resumes by Rae.
