Meet Rachelle Houston: Executive Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachelle Houston and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachelle, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I am motivated by serving others. I believe it is my purpose. Without parents I was raised in Chicago by my Aunt. As a single parent of two she struggled but always put me in activities that we really couldn’t afford. From ballet class on Michigan Ave. to piano lessons at Merritt Music located in Chicago’s downtown loop etc. she was a big fan of Exposure! When funds got really tight I spent time with my grandfather. The first black man to own a golfing range in Selma, Al. Needless to say they made me who I am. So when people ask me why I do what I do or why I founded Excel Youth Academy the answer is simple. Someone did it for Me!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am most proud of my work ethic and positive mindset. My upbringing and faith allows me to believe that all things are possible. Even my disappointments are blessings. I was fortunate enough to be exposed to the game of golf at a young age and I even landed a College Golf Scholarship. Golf opened so many doors for me beyond the course. Recognizing the benefits of the sport; I wanted to expose anyone who was interested in the game but may not have the funds to spare on the exposure. Excel Youth Academy was born from this thought process and desires to be a resource hub for underprivilege youth. Our mobile and virtual academy takes pride in being wherever our services are needed. Using the lessons from the game of golf and the teachings from STEAM activities; EYA provides a fun safe space for our youth between the ages of 7 and 17 to accelerate and advance within their own definitions of achievement! By eliminating the intimidation factor surrounding the game of golf, EYA provides an inviting atmosphere for young golfers from all backgrounds wanting to enhance their skills and opportunities beyond school.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
