We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Nipp and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
So I actually started selling pieces with jewelry in 2015. I was a college freshman and home for the summer. I’d always had a lot of different artistic interests and wanted to try out making products. I remember smashing seashells in the garage to fit them in a tiny jar, and buying little glass balls and string on the internet. The first necklace I sold was shaped like a Cheeto, and it broke in the mail. I also started painting watercolors that summer. I sent one to a friend who was at camp, and she suggested I paint some places around our college town (Athens) for our dorm room. I did, and another roommate suggested I sell those. That’s when I really got started. I posted the paintings to my Etsy shop, and then on Facebook and started getting a lot of requests, especially since I sold them for only $5. After that, I kept up with the local theme for a few years even when I moved to Atlanta. Now I sell a few different art styles, including candles, but a bulk of my artwork is centered around local restaurants. I love bringing those connections to someone’s home; a favorite restaurant is a big part of why people love their neighborhood and it’s not something you often find in artwork. I think no matter what I add to my shop, I want to ensure that it’s something I would buy for myself.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a kid, I was always drawing with pencils and occasionally painting with acrylics. I didn’t feel like the best painter, but as I got older I discovered how much I loved watercolors. Then, I started drawing with my tablet and found the medium I truly love at this moment in my life. I enjoy creativity in all aspects of my life. I’ve dabbled in photography and guitar, and I plan to learn how to sew soon. As for my career, I went to school at the University of Georgia for Advertising and minored in English. I’ve worked in marketing since, in social media and now as a content writer. I know a lot of really great artists and writers fear that their work is never good enough to show publicly, so I would encourage anyone to just go for it. I am by no means the best artist or writer out there, but by pursuing both of those things without getting too discouraged by failure, I’ve been able to start my career following my passions.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to East Atlanta Village to eat at Argosy and go dancing at the Basement. I would also take them to Midtown to walk around Piedmont Park and grab dessert at Cafe Intermezzo. A few other highlights we’d have to hit would be Sun in My Belly for breakfast, Fred’s at Krog for burgers, and Oakland Cemetery. Plus, I’d want to check out New Realm and walk down the BeltLine. Finally, I’d take them to a pilates class at Stellar Bodies, go to an exhibit at The High, and go see a concert at Terminal West.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents! They always supported my artistic interests, both emotionally and financially, and are the only reason I felt confident enough to sell my work in the first place. My fiance, Turner, is also a big support system for me and makes sure to encourage me constantly.
