We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Mazza and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, what do you attribute your success to?
I believe wholeheartedly in authenticity. It’s so easy with today’s social media to get caught up in what you think people will like, what’s trending, etc. My brand has been so successful because I truly just do what I love and am myself 24/7. People really want to connect with creatives and brands that they see as real and can make a genuine connection with. Being myself, and sharing bits and pieces of my personal life through Lipstick Biddies has led me to connect with those who have the same values and sense of humor as I do!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started as a professional makeup artist in NYC and moved to Atlanta in September of 2018. I didn’t know anyone in the area an so I had to start from scratch both personally and professionally. I was able to quickly make connections with local creatives and work with private clients, commercial, bridal, and editorial makeup. I knew that there was a space here for more connections within the makeup artistry community and so Lipstick Biddies Podcast was born. It has grown into a global brand of beauty enthusiasts and professional makeup artists who love to laugh and value community and education. I love to poke fun at the daily things makeup artists deal with and also speak out about problems in our industry. Using my platform I’ve been able to bring together people for meetups both virtually and in Atlanta. More than anything, we are reaching for more connections and it’s wonderful to have a community to call home who lift each other up! It definitely hasn’t been easy as you truly need to dig deep to believe in yourself and surround yourself with those who can also uplift you. One of the biggest lessons I learned along the way is to just trust your gut. The more I followed that gut feeling or intuition on each decision I’ve made both personally and professionally, the more I have grown. You really have to speak out what you want in life and go after your dreams!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One of my favorite parts of being in Atlanta is the weather and the access to so many outdoor activities and spaces. I live on the West End and so you can walk on the west end trail of the Beltline on a sunny Saturday over to the Lee and White building where some of my favorite breweries are. They have outdoor music, great food, and even better people to hang out with and lots of pups! Speaking of pups, Fetch is one of my favorite bars in the city because I am a huge animal lover and work with local rescues as a foster. You can grab a drink and pet some pups, what’s better than that? For dining out, I love all the restaurants in inman park like Beetlecat, and finish it off with a trip to a dive bar in east Atlanta village. I also love staying in the loop with local events and festivals and live music at venues like the Masquerade. In the summers, my absolute favorite place to be on Sundays is Chaka Khan Hacienda which has local vendors and a huge queer community to dance our butts off to some of the best DJS Atlanta has to offer!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to recognize Angelique Velez, who is one of my mentors in my entrepreneurial and makeup artistry journey. Angelique has a very successful brand, Breakups to Makeup, is an educator, a working makeup artist, a community leader, and a podcaster. She constantly gives back to her community and encourages connections between people. She is so generous with her advice and also amplifying voices of unique people who have the same values as her. I am so grateful to have her in my life as a mentor and she has truly been integral to guiding me through the growth of my Lipstick Biddies brand.
