We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Dorneanu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachel, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Quite a few things: -working as a therapist
-mentoring others in the field
-drinking tea and practicing yoga

I so enjoy working as a therapist. I help people to slow down, process the events going on in their life, and help them have lightbulb moment realizations.
Mentoring others in the field feels like part of my calling. I love to share resources and my trial and error experiences whether it’s helping someone get into grad school, build a caseload, market, network, or anything related to improving their confidence in what they do.
Drinking tea and practicing yoga helps me to unwind, practice self care after a long week, and slow down my brain even the smallest bit.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Becoming a therapist has not been an easy journey but it is extremely rewarding. It takes long hours of studying and preparing for sessions, documentation for clients, and research to be competent and confident in the mental health field. Having a great support system has been a huge help. I’m almost fully licensed, a soon to be Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). This takes thousands of hours of training, therapy sessions with clients, supervision hours and reflection to improve continuously to best help our clients. I’m proud of this hard work. My dream is to have my own private practice one day where I find a balance of helping clients and mentoring others to be the best therapists they can be.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d start them off with a trip to North Georgia to see the mountains and wineries to help them unwind. Then we’d walk the beltline in Atlanta and explore all the local businesses and unique restaurants. We would go see a show at the Fox Theater then go dancing so they can experience the nightlife. You also can’t miss the tourist spots like the Georgia Aquarium and the World of Coca Cola. As for food, I really like Yumbii, Henri’s Bakery and Deli, Hen Mother Cookhouse, and anywhere that has a good poke bowl.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m extremely grateful for my husband and family supporting me through the years of grad school, unpaid internship, and growing a caseload. They’ve been so patient and encouraging as I’ve worked toward my dreams. I also have a really supportive group of fellow therapists. We’ll reach out to one another for referrals, nights out to unwind, and a listening ear when sometimes things get tough. It’s nice to have people that truly understand your career too.
