Meet Prince E. Mayes-Sullivan | Actor/Writer/Director/Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Prince E. Mayes-Sullivan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Prince E., can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
They’re aren’t many opportunities for people like me. Handicap, gay, and black. So from an early age my parents and sister encouraged my interest in theater, but was honest. “It’s going to be difficult.” , they said. So I found a way to make everything I mentioned above work to my advantage. Tyler Perry (my biggest inspiration) showed me through screen and stage that, you have to build your own opportunities. That’s always been in my head. “Build your own!”

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always been different. It’s both a good and a bad thing. I think how it worked to my advantage was; I’ve never been afraid to do me. I produced my first play a year after I graduated high school. People warned me it could be bad not having a credentials to my name. But my passion to comedy, music and BIG SHOW became my style. I can make people laugh and think all at the same time. Plus I already had over ten years worth of experience. Even now transitioning to the camera I always bring the same love for entertainment. I think if you truly love it, people will buy it!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve lived in Atlanta only a short while and I’m still adjusting, but I love Atlantic Station. It reminds me of Universal studios minus the sound stages. It’s a great place to go eat, watch a movie or just roll around. As far as food goes, I have a love for Slutty Vegan every couple months. I can’t leave out the water fountain in front of the Tyler Perry Studios front gates. It’s just the most beautiful site!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve had many great teachers throughout the years. Mr. Robert L. Douglas is the first person to teach me how to direct. “A script is like the body.”, He said. “It’s a skeleton that you have to complete to make it a real person who can navigate in the world.” He taught me how to write meaningful words on a page and bring it to life with actors, lights, sets and everything that makes a show.
