We had the good fortune of connecting with Poppy Teez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Poppy, what do you attribute your success to?
People and Purpose. Anything I create has to benefit the people or serve a positive purpose. I have been given a gift that I don’t even truly understand the depths of. But it wouldn’t be a gift if it wasn’t given to others. One of the greatest parts of spoken word, or being a storyteller is the number of people who can benefit from my words is countless.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am the source of all music, the heart of storytelling, and the fear of vulnerability. I am poetry. More specifically, I’m an Award Winning International Poet. I specialize in the art of Spoken Word. I do not create your typical type of poetry. People who don’t like poetry, definitely like me. It’s Raw, it’s real, and sometimes vulgar, but the beauty of my vulnerability knows no bounds. I don’t sugar coat , or make my words flowery I say exactly what I feel in hopes that someone will resonate with and benefit from my words. I got more bars than broadway, and more balls than a tennis coach. I’m most proud of all the people who have been touched by my art. Healing from trauma is not easy, but it’s a lot easier if you can share that trauma with someone who understands what you’re going through. I’m thankful to be that for so many people, and I’m thankful for so many people to be that for me. A leap of faith is what propelled me here. I’ve been writing as an outlet since I was 7 years old. I was an outcast, severely bullied for most of my childhood, and the only freedom I had was my imagination. I started winning school competitions, but never thought I would have a career in writing or storytelling. I was always told to aim higher and pick something more feasible. What can be more feasible than passion? I went from valedictorian to a homeless college freshman in the matter of three months. College became a means of survival and not a place that I could thrive. So ultimately life was preparing me and pushing me more towards my passion; before I even knew it. The biggest lesson I learned was to stop trying to “find myself” and be who I am in the moment. Be whatever you want to be, just be the best version of it you can be.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a fashion and arts groupie. Artlanta Gallery for sure. Art, music, talent, all in one spot. Then do some shopping at some of my favorite minority owned stores (Pink Zebra, The Audacity, etc)
Maybe catch a show at Poetic Jazz, do something Creative at Spin Art.
Slutty Vegan, Djuan’s Bistro, SouthernFire , top 3 restaurants.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes to my “Wife-ager” Trendsetta. I never knew how great I could be until I had someone who saw greatness in me. If it was not for her , I would not be PoppyTeez, I would not have stepped outside my comfort zone and invested in myself. People see my success and immediately want to talk to her about their career. She’s definitely the moving force behind my brand.
