We had the good fortune of connecting with Phoenix Broom and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Phoenix, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success is God. Everything I have and done, I owe it to God. I wouldn’t be here or doing what I am doing without the answered prayers, grace, faith and strength that God instilled in me. Of course! Hard work, determination and consistency played a factor but overall it was my trust in God and just purely walking in faith that brought me the success I have. I am extremely grateful. I never look at where I wish to be I always ask myself how can I get there and I take action with prayer and faith in the forefront.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I began my journey into photography in 2018 unexpectedly. I bought a camera with the intent to create short films and eventually produce movies. I soon became obsessed with the fundamentals of creating a beautiful photograph. I began to study lighting, balance, composition, and the use of space to capture my vision and interpretation of beauty artfully.

I fully immersed myself in photography in college where I shot album covers for upcoming artists and ecommerce photoshoots for upcoming fashion designers. These opportunities assisted in developing my photography style of editorial fashion and portrait photography. This also fed my mission to always help and give back to the community using my gifts and passions.

One of the most unforgettable shoots to date is when I walked out of the dining hall and I saw a girl that had a very unique look. I had to ask her to do a shoot. She agreed and soon later told me that she was so embarrassed because this was the first time she dressed like this and she felt so many people staring and giggling. She actually was on her way back to the dorms to change her outfit. So for me to ask her to shoot came as a shock. The moral of the story is that your beauty may not be recognizable to everyone but someone will see you and think you’re the most beautiful thing in the world! This is one of the many reasons I love photography. Throughout my journey I receive the highest amount of joy when people who don’t believe they are photogenic leave my photoshoots with a greater sense of confidence.

Photography definitely wasn’t easy. It made me very familiar with rejection, cancellations and dead-in inquiries. At first this was a struggle that weighed very heavily on me but I began to realize that these things might seem like failure but they are just bringing you one step closer to success. Despite photography being a tough business to succeed in, deciding on a career in photography was the easiest choice I have ever made when I decided to walk on faith, quit my job and pursue photography full-time. I made the decision to always go after what I want no matter how big the obstacle may seem and I never looked back.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were to visit Atlanta for a week we’d go to Roswell Mill, Six Flags, a parking deck in Downtown Atlanta, the drive- in movie theater, have a picnic in piedmont park, catch a screen on the green in Centennial park and Atlantic Station, go horse back riding, obstacle course at Treetop quest, and lunch at Loca Luna and eat at some other places we’ve never tried before. Lastly, we’ll go to church at Word Of Faith and finish with brunch at Nana’s Chicken and Waffles.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Other than God, my mother and friends played a huge factor in my success. They always believed in me and supported me. Whenever I felt discouraged they reassured me that photography is my gift. As cliché as this may sound, The book Rich Dad Poor Dad played a huge part in me pursuing my dream of photography. I learned how important it is to invest in yourself and your dreams otherwise you’ll be trapped in the rat race of a 9 to 5. A conventional job isn’t necessarily horrible but when there is something that you are passionate about and you don’t go after it will you ever be genuinely happy? That’s the question I had to ask myself for months until I finally decided enough is enough. I chose my dream.
