We had the good fortune of connecting with Phillex Stewart and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Phillex, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
“There’s more than one way to skin a cat” When things aren’t working out in my life, I always remind myself that there are multiple ways to accomplish something. So if what I’m doing isn’t working, I need to change my perspective on it in order to create a new solution.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Hard work and a lot of studying. My music is an extension of me. I always make sure to put a piece of me in every song I create. I feel like a lot of musicians get caught up in trying to emulate the sound of big artists, but the thing that made the greats great was their uniqueness. I’m most proud of this song I made with the working title of, “Are You Really”. It’s the hardest I ever worked on a song and everyone who’s heard it goes crazy for it so I can’t wait to release it. I have a lot of unreleased songs that I’m excited to release this year so be in the look out! Making the music is the fun part but it’s only half the battle. It’s not easy but learning the business side of music and how to market is essential to making it as a musician. I’ve learned a lot of lessons along the way, the most important one being, keep moving. Even if you work just a little bit every day, that consistency will pay off in the long run. It’s like working out. You can’t workout really hard once every few weeks and expect to look like Arnold Schwarzeneggar.
I really care about how music affects the world and how it can influence a generation. I just want the world to know that I will do my best to touch people with my art.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Honestly I’m not the person you want to have planning your visit. I enjoy chilling with my friends in the house more than going out, but one place I love going to is the High Art Museum. As an artist and someone who studies art, it’s a beautiful place and I think anyone would enjoy going. Then I’d definitely take them to Wing Nuts and afterwards take them to Sweet Stack for some ice cream.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Honestly I have so many people to thank, my loving family, my best friend Martez, my talented producer PJ, but most of all I want to give a special shout out to my best friend and girlfriend, Nia Luke. She’s known me since I was young and she always told me I’d be special. I always thought she was crazy and didn’t believe her, but the older I get the more I realize she saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself. She supported me before I supported myself and I couldn’t do all this without her.
