We had the good fortune of connecting with Philip Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Philip, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
1. I was a musician looking for work when I wasn’t on tour with the band, and I got a job at a local, independent coffee shop in Athens. I started to learn more about coffee and really became fascinated by so many aspects of what goes into it, where it comes from, and what it means to people who love it. Later on, while touring on the west coast, I had the opportunity to experience new and interesting flavors and techniques with coffee. So much so that I started experimenting with brewing and roast profiles which ultimately drove me to strike out on my own and start PERC. 2. Hmm, that’s tough. 3. In the beginning, I was lucky enough to have the privilege and support to be able to take a risk knowing that if I failed, I could get back on my feet. The hard thing about risk is that, as your business grows, there will be multiple risks you face, so there’s not a lot of relief getting past a major hurdle. Another thing that factors into risk is all the amazing people who work for me. I owe it to them and their families not to take risks lightly. Lately, I’ve realized that there is constant risk and that not taking a risk is a decision in itself and will have consequences… so it’s kinda crazy. I try to remember that we’re running a marathon, not a sprint. 4. Empathy, hard work, strong will, luck, know-how, creativity, understanding what I’m not good at and hiring for that, and loads of support from the community and my family. 5. See above 🙂 6. Patience, trying to set aside some time for myself and my family. Back to the marathon thing. 7. Ha, see above. Those things plus exercise and sleep. I have trouble sleeping, but I feel like I’m a super me when I actually get enough sleep. So usually, exercise helps with that. 8. I think I hit on this in answer 1. 9. I’ve always been into artistic endeavors. Even now, I run the business more like a band than anything else. More than art, I need to be passionate about what I’m doing. If I’m into something, I’ll go to the ends of the earth to learn everything I can about it. 10. People who are passionate, honest, and genuine.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I roast and share dang good coffee

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take folks to Forsyth park to chill and have a good time. Then dinner at Green Truck pub followed by drinks at Two Tides.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Charlie Mustard at Jittery Joe’s. He is an awesome guy and a great boss. Being around him, learning from him, and hearing him speak to other folks about coffee was an inspiration.
