We had the good fortune of connecting with Paul Owusu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Paul, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Though starting Phreshly was purely accidental, I spent the early days of the pandemic indulging in new hobbies, including mixing cocktails. I shared these recipes on social media, and after a viral tweet, Phreshly was born.
The thought process was simple. How do we define and create an excellent cocktail for the modern-day drinker? After research and lots of data analysis, my co-founder Ama and I decided to launch it in the summer of 2020.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Art can be subjective because it is an expression of personal perspective. It can also be subjective because we all have different tastes and preferences.
For me, creating a cocktail recipe and the cocktails themselves always have a single outcome: to transport people to a place. A place you fell in love, had the best food, started life, etc. For example, transporting people to the flavors and state notes of Ghana, where I am from, is always my creative point of view.
Authenticity is the biggest lesson during this journey. It is also how I overcome challenges and sets me apart.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is a good one! I’ve only lived here for a year, but I have had some incredible experiences.
For this, I’d say we’ll have brunch at Superica, then a walk on Beltline to discover local shops at Ponce City Market. I will stop at Souk Bohemian and The Print Shop for some art! This is just day 1!
The rest of the trip will be centered around ATL culture. Trap Art Museum, attend a few Soho House events. This is my public cry for Soho House to open a house here ( I hope you are listening, Sheyda) — with dinner and cocktails at Aziza, Yebo Beach House, or Umi Sushi.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Ama Marfo, my co-founder & Tahaji Felder of Target (including the entire Target Accelatator Team)
