Meet Patricia Barnes | Motivational speaker & Personal Development Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Patricia Barnes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Patricia, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. One of my favorite books that I recommend Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki talks about the impact of his rich dad and poor dad. That being said, the impact of who I am today is based off my functional and dysfunctional family.
My functional family who I adore are quiet, humble, hardworking, supportive, and giving people. Because of my family have amazing work ethic. We worked for everything we have. My grandparents were sharecroppers from North Carolina. My grandfather only has a fifth grade education. My drive comes from knowing my family history. I will accomplish all my goals and never complain because they did what they had to do to survive. Why would I complain? Or not work harder when my grandparents did all they can do to give us a better life? I don’t quit. I shine bright just so my grandparents know nothing they did or went through was ever in vain.
Some of us have dysfunctional families. I like to always find the good and positivity in any situation. Dysfunctional family taught me my true character. I can give, support, love, be kind, even when I’m not getting it in return. But at the same time to reach the next level stopped trying to help people who don’t want to help themselves first. I stopped giving to family members who only want to take but not give back. I invest my time, energy, and resources into people who have the same drive and character as me. In order to not change the good parts of me or become angry only give to others who earn it, deserve it, bring something to the table, or Holy Spirit led. That’s a form of self love won’t compromise. I learned to never settle for less, help myself before help others, and not allow family or anyone to mistreat me especially when you’re a good person and want the best for everyone.
Now I’m aligned with equally yoked relationships. I no longer have to dim my light or shrink to be all God created me to be. It’s at least one person in the family who is called to do great things. Pursuing goals beyond what my family has done is challenging. It’s not easy being a trailblazer. I know my purpose on earth is to be a generational changer to break unhealthy eating habits and sedentary lifestyle, managing money, learn self care, pursue big dreams, develop communication skills to thrive in relationships, be the voice for people who can relate to me, and establish personal relationship with God.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
How did you get to where you are today business-wise. My first year as a registered nurse started to think about what’s next. Thought about pursuing graduate school or discover my life purpose. Although, didn’t know what it meant to walk in your purpose nor did I know if graduate school was truly for me. After, reviewing my options didn’t believe nursing master’s degree was the right path for me and decided to stop chasing college degrees.
I discovered my enjoyment of teaching and fulfillment to encourage others especially when they feel down or defeated. Launched Go Patty LLC in 2017. The journey has been nerve-racking and thrilling.
I consider myself a Purposepreneur. An entrepreneur who walks in their purpose and makes a profit. The purpose driven individual enjoys giving free information because she wants everyone to win. But the entrepreneur understands impact and income go hand in hand.
Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges?
The challenge believing speaking was my purpose because I’m an introvert who had a fear of public speaking and insecurities. I knew wasn’t well spoken because rarely talked so skill wasn’t developed and didn’t like the sound of my voice. My accent mixed with southern dialect and baltimorean slang. Growing up around quiet family members, not articulating my thoughts, and being the first family member to go to college who raised me made me feel embarrassed when was around college professionals who were well spoken.
But that’s how God works. He pushes you beyond your comfort zone to accomplish a bigger goal. His purpose for your life doesn’t change because of your self- limiting beliefs. Your fears and insecurities encourage others who feel the same way and struggle to start their goals and dreams. Even with fears and insecurities God can still use you. He qualifies your purpose. The more I share my story, the more people will walk authentically in their purpose and cultivate their gifts with boldness. Practice makes you better. You can thrive and win even if you don’t feel ready or good enough.
What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way.
10 life lessons learned along the way:
1. If things don’t work out as planned focus on the next thing. Eventually, everything comes full circle and works out better than you planned the first time.
2. Stand tall in your truth unashamed and unapologetic.
3. Laziness, codependency, welfare mentality, and excuses don’t produce results. Work for the lifestyle you want.
4. Life is beautiful when you finally understand life, accept the highs with the lows, good and the bad, and you laugh as loud as you cry.
5. Have difficult conversations. Nothing changes until you speak up.
6. The ability to self-evaluate and not blame others is the key to growth. You will never reach your full potential until honest with yourself and take ownership when you’re wrong.
7. Always go with the choice that scares you the most because will help you grow the most.
8. You can’t help people until they are open and willing to change their perspective and mindset.
9. There will always be a struggle between who you use to be and who you want to be. It’s essential to have relationships that reflect who you want to become.
10.Empower others instead of enabling bad behavior and decisions because people will remain the same. Evolution comes when allow others to tell you the truth for personal growth even if it hurts your feelings.

what you are most proud of or excited about.
I’m most proud of my brand’s ability to show up raw and authentic by sharing the journey of success is not always fun or easy but whatever you want to achieve it’s more than doable. My intentions are to be honest sharing my flaws just as much as my wins. The real work to win is not often shared such as working under high stress levels, ability to withstand pressure and criticism, late nights and early mornings, pushing yourself to do more when sad or depressed, wearing cheap clothes and doing your own hair and nails, hustler’s mindset to grind until you get what you want, self motivation when you want to quit, and doing it with or without support is the true journey of success.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
You’re in for a treat. If you want to take a break from Atlanta. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We all know it takes a village to raise a child. Shoutout to my parents, grandfather, and aunt but the real MVP is my grandmother Virginia. We had a special relationship. My grandmother was my rock. May she rest in eternal peace. I really need to thank my great grandmother for raising such a lovely daughter. I am her legacy. Her legacy of hardworking, holding yourself accountable, loving, caring, encouraging, homemaker, strong, tenacity, honest, dependable, nurturing, supportive, feminine woman and wife material. It doesn’t take a lot of money to become successful in the beginning. It takes someone who will believe in your dreams, support your dreams, uplift you when you’re down, and not let you give up. Now my gift as a motivational speaker is to pour into others the same way my grandmother poured into me.
