We had the good fortune of connecting with Patrice Roulhac and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Patrice, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I always loved makeup. I used to sneak in my mothers makeup in middle school and put it on but, didn’t think much of it after that. Once I got to high school I took a cosmetology course that my school offered to its students and became a licensed cosmetologist. A few years behind the chair and I soon realized, curling hair is way too hot, my feet hurt and this takes too much time. I wanted to still be a part of the beauty industry and tried to figure out, ‘What am I good at?”. Once I figured out it was makeup artistry I honed in on that skill.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m a professional makeup artist and I specialize in Timeless Soft Glam. There’s been many times where I’ve seen a film or a piece of media from several decades ago and the makeup still can be worn today. A true artist, whether you’re a musician, makeup artist, or architect you want your art to age well. That’s my reasoning behind the timeless aspect of my art.

It took some years to get to where I am as a business and I still have so long to go. The hardest and longest decision I had to make was investing in my business. I just couldn’t bring myself to spend all this money into being a makeup artist but I could sign off of thousands of student loans. The beginning of my journey it was engrained in my thoughts that being a beauty professional isn’t a ‘real’ job and you can’t make money. Because if that iI was constantly dragging my feet. I literally hit rock bottom and I had an ‘Ah Haaa’ moment and knew something had to change. That moment I asked myself, ‘How bad do you want it?’. Within the past 6 months this is the most I’ve invested mentally, physically and financially into my business. With that I’ve seen a complete
360. For the months of September and October I had clients every weekend. I even got to work on a project with Celebrity Event Planner, Marcy Blum who has done event for people like Oprah.

I would like to the world to know when having makeup application services with me, it’s an experience. You’ll get great makeup and an experience. My brand still has so much work to accomplish and I have a lot of growing to do as an artist. I want every beauty professional to know hard work pays off and stay committed.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m back in forth between Atlanta and DC. I’m going to go with the District since it’s my hometown! Everyone one knows the entire Brunch and Day party revolution began in DC. On Sunday the place I’ll suggest for a good time would be Creole On 14th in the Columbia Heights neighborhood. The food is great and the day party is chill enough to bring your auntie. If your grabbing lunch throughout the week head to a few of my faves Carolina Kitchen, Clyde’s, and Roaming Rooster. If you’re the outdoorsy type head over to Great Falls Park and catch some views of the falls and get some hiking in. As the week dwells to the end you can head to the National Harbor and catch views of the Potomac River, enjoy great food and outlet shops!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
One person who has truly deserves some credit to my story is my Cosmetology instructor, Joan Martin. This woman is a beacon of knowledge. She’s taught me the importance of professionalism and working hard. Any question throughout my journey as a beauty professional she was always able to answer it but, consistently give me sound advice. Two quotes that she has preached to me are: “Knowledge is power. and “As a cosmetologist you should never cry ‘I’m broke’.” Nobody can never take your knowledge away and as a licensed cosmetologist there’s so many avenues that you can make money because well of course, it’s a billion dollar industry.
