We had the good fortune of connecting with Parker McCord and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Parker, what matters most to you?
Authenticity. I feel like when you’re listening to music, you can always tell when someone’s heart isn’t in it 100%. I always make sure to put everything I’ve got into every second of each song. Every nanosecond is carefully planned and if something ever sounds off-putting or different, it’s supposed to, and I think that’s what everyone needs to be doing with their music.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been making music since I was 13 and didn’t even know how to make music. It started as a joke with my friends, I had an alias and would make the worst ‘meme music’ I could possibly think of. It was just for me and my friends, but trying to create something that was uniquely me at the same time was exhilarating. I discovered a bunch of electronic instruments and when one of them scratched my ear, I would never include it in one of the ‘joke songs’ because I didn’t want to disrespect such a beautiful sounding instrument.
After that, I started writing songs, which weren’t particularly good, but my favorite part was creating the music behind it. When I got older, I started writing better and reading more. Even though some of them were still pretty terrible, at 15 I was able to write songs I’m still in love with today, like ‘Blood Manor Inn’ with Kendall Rucks, and ‘Til Mourning’, which are both on my 2022 sophomore EP, ‘Heavy Silence’.
I think a challenge for me was that I didn’t dive into the gritty parts of DAWS until I had already released two albums that I’ve wiped off the internet. I’ve now watched countless youtube videos about how to do certain things. Anyone can make music, but you need to develop a uniqueness in style that make it undoubtedly yours.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I’m in Atlanta, I’d take them to Videodrome! It’s a dvd rental store ran by super cool people who host viewing events and you can find probably any movie you’d ever be able to in there. In Nashville, I’d take them to my favorite lake, and then to Frothy probably.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Both Cory Liner and Rose Starring are two of my bestest friends, they’re both so incredibly talented and every song of theirs makes me blush. I can send everything I make to them and they’ll be so honest and sweet, I’m very appreciative.
