We had the good fortune of connecting with Paloma Alcantar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Paloma, how does your business help the community?
Publishing a book is a dream for many writers, however most of the time this dream lives in their hearts. I feel that providing them with the resources to achieve this dream has become part of my life’s purpose. I wish to be a guide and safe space, something that I looked for in my own beginning as a writer. Writing/Poetry/Art is a gift that the world deserves.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
From the beginning I wanted to publish my first poetry book in Spanish. It is part of my essence, it is the language of my ancestors. However, it was very difficult to find a publisher that was open to this proposal. Everything comes at the right time, and the opportunity came when I was ready. As part of the immigrant community, we go through many challenges. Although these challenges have made me think about giving up many times, they have also allowed me to grow in all aspects.
I think that every goal will come with many challenges. One of the greatest challenges we face is our own mind. Working on my mental health and emotions daily has been my great personal journey of transformation. I love sharing this through my books, as they are messages for me and for those who are open to receive them. Life gives us the chance to dream about everything that is possible, the hard part is being consistent, thoughtful, and trying not to lose our way.
My brand, my work, and my projects carry with them the commitment to do my best in each of them. For me, this means following the path of the heart and being authentic.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a coffee lover so we would surely go to several coffee shops. The Blue Ridge Mountains are one of my most favorite places to see and explore. Young Harris also has a hotel that I love and Bell Mountain is very close. The Botanical Gardens, Stone Mountain Park, and the museums in downtown are a must-see in Atlanta.
Providence Canyon State Park and Calloway Gardens are also nice places to visit. I also love the beaches here in Georgia. Tybee Island is always a good escape from the city life; I love that you can walk from one place to another without needing a car on the island.
I also love to apple pick when it is in season in Ellijay. The vineyards in Dahlonega are definitely a must-see, as well as the beautiful lights and traditions that are all around town during Christmas.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve had great mentors in my life, both personally and professionally. I will always be grateful for ALEGRIA PUBLISHING, as this publisher has opened many doors for me. They have allowed me to publish my first book as a solo author, which was a watershed in my life.
I would like to give credit to Michelle Remond, who is one of my best friends, mentors, and has been the editor-in-chief on my books. I would also like to give credit to Mercedes Guzman, who is a great friend, and my life mentor for many years. Above all, the support of my husband, Adrian, and my sons Gustavo and Alejandro, who have been a great boost in my career. My oldest son always tells me, “If you are well, everyone at home is well.” We are not alone and we don’t grow from the individual space, we are all growing on a shared journey. We continually learn from each and every person in our life.
