We had the good fortune of connecting with Oseremi “O” Egure and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Oseremi “O”, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Creativity has always been apart of my nature as a kid. I was either making tiny houses out of popsicle sticks, drawing Sailor Moon paper dolls or even painting portraits. Either way I’ve always ended up finding something creative to do with my hands. Makeup artistry was a career path that I knew I could truly express myself as well as making others feel good.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I would say that my style of makeup is what makes me different amongst other makeup artists. I’m mostly proud of the work I did for Mefeater Magazine Mother’s Day Cover featuring Lynn Whitfield and her daughter Grace Gibson. That opportunity made me invest and grow more into my business. I did a lot of free work, but only if it made sense. I would collab with photographers to do makeup for their models and in exchange I would get the shots I needed for my portfolio. This profession is not easy. The way I overcome my challenges is by prayer, practice, and patience. One lesson I’ve learned is that you need to know the value of your work and stand by it. If you know your work’s value others will too. I want to let the world know that at the end of the day I’m just a goofy Canadian chick that loves good authentic vibes and peace.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take my best friend to places like Pho 24, Kelz Kitchen, Breakfast at Barney’s, Cafe Intermezzo, Rosa’s Home Cooking, Escobar Restaurant & Tapas, Josephine’s Lounge, Trap Music Museum, Top Golf, Bar Vegan, Crave Atl, and R. Thomas Deluxe Grill. In my opinion the Rooftop at Ponce City Market, Colony Square, The Home Depot Backyard, and Atlantic Station are great areas to enjoy.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When I started getting into editorial makeup, the first photographer I ever collaborated with wasn’t really open to my ideas nor my suggestions. That experience discouraged me from working with other photographers, but that changed when I met Fritz Taylor. A talented black women photographer from Brooklyn, New York. Whenever we both had an idea or a concept in mind, she was always down to shoot. She made our visions come to life. Whenever I have mental breakdown especially when it comes to business, she always checks in on me. Having her as my business partner and friend really helped elevate my craft, and I truly thank her for that! I also thank my close circle of friends as well as other photographers and models that I’ve collaborated with. I am very grateful.
