We had the good fortune of connecting with Olivia Rodriguez Escobar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Olivia, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
In all honesty, staying true to myself has been the main reason thus far.
Since I was incredibly young, I’m talking like 5-6, I’ve said that I wanted to be a cartoonist; I’ve wanted to draw create things that people will enjoy looking at, reading, watching, etc.
However, it wasn’t until I failed a math class my first time around in college that I really doubled down on the “I want to do what I love, I’m going to be an artist” path.
At this point in my life being able to get out of my head and sit down and draw something that I know will make someone out there smile or be entertained is what keeps me going.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As of this moment, most of what I have been creating has been art made for the masses. I don’t limit myself to one type or style of art, and im constantly trying to make my drawings more interesting to look at by including as much detail as possible. Even my more cartoon-based pieces have a lot of detail, and as cartoons become more simplified it makes what I create stand out.
I will say however, getting to this point definitely was not easy. Doing only art does not always ‘bring home the bacon’ as they say, especially in this economy. So, Everyday is a constant battle against being too tired after my day job to get up and draw for hours. But, I’ve found by streaming, and getting other people involved while I am drawing it makes it much easier to stay encouraged to keep going, especially on those -very- tiring days.
The most important thing I have learned along the way has been, you are your worst critic. You will always be harder on yourself than anyone one else will. Those tiny little things that you have tried and tried and tried to change, most people will never even notice them. It’s okay to strive for perfection, but it is 10000% ok if you never reach it.
Pertaining to me, my brand, my story. I’m honestly just another person. I’ve been through the thick of it like everyone else has. I strive to make people smile, to reminisce, to think about something other than the craziness that is life right now. Not all of it is top tier technically, but damn you’ll probably laugh. And that’s my favorite thing to see.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Typically speaking my husband and I are home bodies, we like to hang out at home and play games, and most of our friends are usually cool with joining us to just chill at home.
However, if I were to take out a friend who doesn’t visit the area often: If we are feeling in the mood to be active we would walk the East Palisades Indian trail or take some kayaks out on Allatoona lake.
We would likely hit up a Sweet hut for some buns and boba tea at some point and of course at least one time while they are there we would head to Minatos, they have some of the best sushi, the the owner is one of the nicest men I’ve ever met.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
If it weren’t for my closest friends and my husband I don’t know if I would have ever even made it out of college let alone into any kind of career. They have been the crux and the rocks I’ve leaned on and I truly owe them everything. Also My family, my multitude of sisters ,who always are some of my biggest cheerleaders and my parents who even since I was just a kid supported my pursuit in the art world.
