We had the good fortune of connecting with Ohavia Phillips and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ohavia, what do you attribute your success to?
Thank you so much to the family for this opportunity. Thank you for always providing a platform for business owners to not only connect but make meaningful relationships. I’m appreciative. When I think about The Oh Show LLC, I feel like we define the word pivot. Seriously. The most important factor behind my success is I leave my brand open to changing. Let’s take 2020 for example, The show started taking off in ways I did not imagine. But my audience was changing. I felt it coming, and I ignored it. But then, it became obvious. So I learned not to stay so committed to one thing, but leaving your brand open to fresh ideas and perspectives. The most important factor behind my success is I leave myself open. For example, I change the name of my talkshow of five years (The Oh Show) to now BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE WITH OHAVIA PHILLIPS. Did it feel weird? Absolutely. But it bought about many blessings. Like backing from Ortho Carolina and my Queen city podcast family, and some other things. Trust the process.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am the steward of The Oh Show LLC. A positive multi media content business. Through hosting, speaking and moderating important conversations, the goal is positivity. The goal is to bring communities together in ways they never imagined. Through perspective, thought and in some cases core values. Not to challenge those things, but to feel inspired to hear one another out. Through the use of music, icebreakers and some laughs along the way, the goal is to bring the world positive media content. In a world where negativity sells, gossip is looked forward to and in some cases blatant lies are shared – it is important that our next generation have a choice. That is why I’ve decided to pick up the mantle. Positive media content can be valuable and go viral.
Of course there were challenges along the way, especially regarding funding. But I do what it takes every time. Currently with my role at Central, community college I’m very excited to not only serve our next generation, but feel valued while doing so. Bottom line is this, anything you choose to steward cost something. But at the end of the day, you are on assignment.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite place to spend time is DUPP & SWATT in Charlotte North Carolina. Under the tutelage of Davita and Dion, the superhero Brother and sister duo, they are everything. I would recommend taking a stop inside. You never know, you can find yourself having an hours long conversation about the meaning of life and walk away filled up more than when you started. It’s spiritual in that space. Also you can meet the best creatives. Keep it authentic friends. That’s what the business represents.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I believe in giving flowers where they are due. That’s what I love so much about this series. I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my good sis, Meredith Dean. Not only is she the definition of allyship and community, but she also ensures to amplify everybody. That means a lot. And, she has a special way of connecting everybody. And not just the network connections, but the real deep ones. Like somehow you will find that you have similarities with some really awesome people. And that would inspire you both to collaborate. That’s special. That’s what you get from my good sister Meredith Dean. She is the epitome of, the Dean’s list.
