We had the good fortune of connecting with Nwabata Nnani and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nwabata, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting my business was to bridge the gap between generations x, y, and z. I thought if I could accurately tell the stories of each generation then we could grow together in this ever changing world.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I would say my work continues to develop as I learn everyday. If I had to describe my art in a few words, I would say it’s resilient, dependable and paramount. I am excited about the future of my business after this last year in the pandemic. I spent the last year growing as a writer through my mentors from #StartWith8Hollywood and WOCU. I finally feel like I have a community that is excited to see me grow and thrive. My journey has been anything short of easy. Before I started I my company BATA Studios, I was working for a sports company in NYC. I had no idea of my worth at the time as a producer so I took little pay. I couldn’t even afford a place to stay. One night after work, I found that I was no longer welcome at the home I was staying in and I was homeless for a night in New York City. I took a bus back to North Carolina the next day and promised myself that I would never end up in a situation like being homeless again.
I learned that you have know your value and ask for what you need.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend visiting for a week in Atlanta, I would most definitely start with a quick pick up meal from the Atlanta Fish House and Grill for the fish and shrimp dinner (and don’t forget the red sauce). For those chill days, check out The Sleepy Potato, I usually stuff my potato with shrimp and crab. I’d hit up Crave for drinks and a good time in the evening and you’ll meet some great people there!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would be no where without my parents. I would like to dedicate my success to my mother Josephine who invested and continues to invest in my future. To my father who purchased me a camera every year and for introducing me to your love for cameras. Uncle Fred thank you for the endless support. You are like a father to me and I appreciate you for listening to me especially on those very emotional days. Last but not least, I want to thanks Lord Phly for letting me experiment with him as my ginny pig. It’s been a pleasure creating with such an open spirit.
