We had the good fortune of connecting with Nonee Ngazimbi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nonee, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I am a creative at heart. By profession, I am a nurse practitioner practicing in the Neurological Trauma Critical Care. I knew that in order to feel fulfilled in my life, I needed to find something that I could be a creative outlet for me. I started my first blog in 2012 while I was still in my undergraduate studies. That grew into YouTube, and then my 2nd rendition of a blog, and then a blogger community for local bloggers in Connecticut.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
By profession, I am a nurse practitioner in a busy intensive care unit. Our patient population have some sort of injury to the brain and spinal cord. Something that sets me apart from others in my practice setting is my global perspective. I was born and raised in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and spent much of my teenage years in Idaho, Florida, and Washington. I am open minded and able to connect with patients in ways that some of my colleagues can not.

To become a nurse practitioner, you have to have a bachelors and masters degree in nursing. In between those degrees, you have to have experience. It was not an easy road. In fact, it was very challenging. I’ve learned that the early bird catches the worm. Procrastination is my enemy and makes you pay ten fold whether through debilitating stress or missed opportunities. Especially when you combine your professional career with creative entrepreneurial endeavors, you have to stay organized.

With my blog, I commit to making myself present and visible in some capacity daily. I ensure to participate in social media via content curation and formal blogging with articles on my blog, Nonee’s World. My blogger community, Connecticut Bloggers Collective, shares local bloggers via social channels in efforts to be a visual directory for local brands. Furthermore, four times a year, we plan events to bring the community together. Neither of my creative brands are were I want them to be, but I hope to continue growing them in the future.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Connecticut is a small state but there is lots to do and see. The beauty of it being small is that we can easily commute around the state in a short time. In the spring or summer in West Hartford, I would begin by taking a friend to Hartford Baking Co for coffee and breakfast. It is a staple bakery with fantastic breakfast sandwiches and great coffee. I would then take them to the West Hartford Reservoir for a casual, beautiful, and long stroll around the pond. In the afternoon, I would pick up to go New Haven style pizza and Caesar salad from Frank Pepe’s and take it to Elizabeth Park for an afternoon picnic. In the evening, I would dine al fresco at Artisan restaurant in their beautiful garden. This would be the perfect day.

Other not to miss Connecticut parks are Talcot Mountain, Wickham Park, Devils Hopyard State Park, and Harkness Memorial State Park. Other restaurants include Barcelona, BarTaco, Parkville Market, Seoul bbq Sushi, Union Kitchen, Banh Meee, Flora, Heirloom Market, MilkCraft, and Siam Glastonbury. The best shopping center is West Farms Mall and everything you may need shopping wise is right around there.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to extend a special thank you to my brother, Busani Ngazimbi. He has been brave enough to take many risks in his life in order to fulfill his dreams. When I went to him and expressed my sadness over the fact that I was sentenced to a life in healthcare and I would never be able to explore fashion, he gave me the idea of starting a blog. He showed me what blogs look like and what people share on them. He truly opened my eyes to a new world.
