We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Marshall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicole, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am originally from Kingston, Jamaica and I lived there for a little over 15 years. Being raised in Jamaica, I was brought up in a structured household with two hard working parents. I watched them every day and would sometimes go with them to their trucking business in the mornings. My parents were hardworking entrepreneurs who had a successful business and I saw how hard they worked for years ensuring their kids were taken care of. I believe that helped shaped the person I am today and it gave me the ability persevere and it gave me the strong work ethic I have today. I also believe my school experience helped to make me a strong individual who won’t allow anyone’s opinion to hinder my purpose.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Currently, I work full time at a reputable television station as a Content Coordinator and in my spare time I write books for children. I am most proud of the messaging in my books that teach children about self-worth and self-confidence. I also made it a point to make sure that I chose relatable topics that children can see themselves in. It is important for a child to be able to see themselves as the main character or relate to the main character of a book as it can help boost their self-esteem. The feedback that I have gotten from parents telling me that their kids are now reciting the positive affirmations from my book Little Nikki Her Journey to Self-Love “I love myself. I love me and everything about me.” just melts my heart because self-love is so important. Another thing I am proud of is another parent revealed to me that her daughter thought she was looking at herself on the cover of my book “Ebony and Her Crown.” This is so important because representation does matter. My writing journey has not been easy and I had to overcome a lot of self-doubt but once I got through that and saw the impact I was having on young children that compelled me to continue. A lesson I have learned is to stop comparing yourself to others, it will put a false narrative in your head that you are behind or not doing enough. I want the world to know that my journey is just beginning and I will continue to produce quality children’s books that teach life lessons to help shape and mold their emotional development. I am currently working on my third children’s book that will also teach young kids about being adventurous, being kind, and taking risks. I am hoping to release this book in 2023 and will be able to release information on the title and more.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Atlanta so I would definitely take them the city for drinks, tour the CNN building, visit the Georgia aquarium, maybe check out a comedy show and lastly have dinner at a fine dining restaurant in midtown Atlanta. There are also a lot of parks here in Atlanta that tourist love to visit and most notably stone mountain park.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate this Shoutout to my Family. Without them, I would have given up on my writing journey specifically on my second book because of self-doubt. I am happy that I published my books “Little Nikki Her Journey to Self-Love” and “Ebony and Her Crown.” Both books show positive representation and teach young readers to love and accept who they are as individuals. My goal is to write books that inspire children to be proactive about self-love because it is not just a word it is a verb and it needs to be practiced regularly and instilled into their minds how special they are at a young age.
