We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Lin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicole, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from Taiwan, and I majored in advertising during my undergraduate years. Because of the connections between advertising and motion graphics, I had the opportunity to explore motion graphics and found my passion for it. Therefore, I came to the US to study at Savannah College of Art and Design to specialize my knowledge in Motion Media.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a motion designer who enjoys both 2D and 3D design and animation. Additionally, I love adding a bit of humor or Easter eggs into my projects. Most of my ideas come from my life, and I exaggerate them as the concept of my projects. For example, “Before Add in Cart” is a motion piece about the process of imagining how I cook shrimp before adding them to my shopping cart.
I’m the kind of person who tries my best to achieve my goals. I’m not afraid to step out of my comfort zone to learn everything I need to complete my projects. It’s not always easy, but I really enjoy visualizing my ideas into a motion piece, so I keep challenging myself to explore different styles and techniques. Unfortunately, there are times when I fail to solve a problem, especially with 3D projects. However, I don’t think my efforts are in vain, because I always learn something during the process. This sometimes makes my next attempt smoother, and other times there will be some good surprises.
I believe that even if I stand in the same spot in this minute and the next, I am already a different version of myself. This idea motivates me to overcome difficulties.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I really like bakeries and sweets! If you are visiting Savannah and have a sweet tooth, I highly recommend putting my list into your schedule. The first bakery on my list is Bake in The Day. They only open on Saturdays and Sundays, but their bread and sweets are my top picks in Savannah. I also recommend trying the waffles at the Blue Door, ice cream from Starland Strange and Bazaar, the lemon pie and banana bread from Mate Factory, coffee from PERC, and the goat cheese brownie from Foxy Loxy. These are all on my pocket list.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First of all, my parents definitely deserves credits! Although they are really strict to me since my childhood, they have always supported my decisions and future plans. Without their support, I would not have the opportunity to come to the US to study in an art school. Next I want to shout out to all my friends in Taiwan and the US. When I’m in deep, chatting with friends is one of the ways I sort out my mood. Their opinions and encouragement will cheer me up and continue to work on my project and life.
