We had the good fortune of connecting with Nickeisha Henry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nickeisha, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Since I was a child I’ve been driven by passion and purpose. I knew I was here for a reason and that’s to be of service to others. However, my journey has taken me down different paths until I found what I was called to do. Break generational blockages by working diligently towards purpose, while giving back to those less fortunate. This was my thought process that was the driving force to the birth of my business.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Whether it was drawing, painting, music or dancing, as a child I favored anything artistic. Looking back I had the best time in my room with a pencil and note pad drawing flowers, or houses. Why those two specific things I’m not sure but I lived in my imagination and I had a ball there. As an adult I drifted and went into everything but the arts as it pertains to profession but on my person I oozed art. From colorful hair to long, short or design laced nails. This started when I was 15 years old.
As I got older, my passion for these things grew but more in the sense of having them done on myself lol. I learned to do my own hair, including color, ponytails, and most styles but I went to the salon to get my nails done.
When I became a mom of a daughter of course I know she would watch everything mommy does . In 2018, when my daughter turned 14 she expressed to me that she wanted to get her nails done with acrylic. I was against it at first but her father was okay with the idea. I decided to take my baby to the salon where I frequented to get her nails done for the first time. It was a special day and she was so excited! However, her first experience was everything but joyous. The nail techs were very rude to us and did not deliver quality work. The experience left us feeling hurt disappointed.
It was then that I vowed to learn this art so I can maintain our nails myself. I bought a starter kit that had all the essential supplies and nail art. I practiced on myself, my daughter and my mother.
During that time I fell in love with the art and my passion for nail application and design grew.
The following year I decided to make it a procession so I enrolled into The cosmetology program at Empire Beauty School. I graduated December of 2019 and started taking clients by January of 2020.
Goddesstrendz Beauty was birthed in June 2020 when I received my LLC.
Have you ever had a dream that was so crucial to your goals and aspirations that you would do absolutely anything to make them come true, I’ve had that dream.
My first year in business was very challenging. I was faced with many obstacles and blockages that left me riddled with anxiety. I had to learn different techniques to cope with the stress that was brought on from my business. But I wanted it so badly that I fought and won. However, I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t still get hard.
As a single parent one of the biggest lessons I want my children to learn from watching me is that we are built to last no matter how hard it gets. We are gifted with will power and strength it’s up to us to utilize them accordingly..
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned this year is patience… what’s for me will always be mine, and when it’s my time what’s for me won’t pass me by. My responsibility is to remain steadfast , unwavering and loyal to myself first. I have to pour into me first because I can’t pour from an empty cup!
My dream is to be in the position where I can give back to those less fortunate, or just give period. If I am blessed I want to use that blessing to bless others, that’s what my brand is about! I do that now as a small business but I can’t wait to be placed in a position to do it on a grander scale. That’s my ultimate goal!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Honestly I’m so busy with work that I don’t get to go out much but when I do I like to go skating in Prospect Park or or Brooklyn Bridge Park skating rink.
Dumbo and Williamsburg has delightful new and vintage restaurants.
The Brooklyn Museum or Bushwick Collective Street Art for all of us art lovers.
The botanical garden to take in the beautiful scenery
Brooklyn Brewery, Barclays Center or one of Brooklyn’s oldest staples … Coney Island and Luna park.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My children, Ashanti, Triston and Adriana for being my rock and biggest motivation’s.
