We had the good fortune of connecting with Nick Heyward and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nick, how does your business help the community?
We live in a climate where everyone is searching for a place where they can belong and a group that they can identify with. Cornerstone Fellowship provides a place where all people are welcome. We service the community through our Outreach Ministry, Prophesied Legacy Ministries. To service the community we have participated in blanket drives, provided Christmas dinner and toys to families in need, offered mentorship, and shared God’s word whenever possible. We also cater to the spirit man through Cornerstone Fellowship with #Plmprayertime, our Monday night prayer call, and #TalkThroughTheText our Tuesday night version of Bible study.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am proud to say that through Cornerstone Fellowship we share the message of redemption with the masses. Technology allows us to be located in South Carolina, but share our message and offer fellowship to everyone everywhere. Some of our biggest supporters come from other states! Every sermon, outreach event, and post are created with the idea of presenting Christ in a way that it compels others to want to follow. There’s no better example than our lives, and I feel my personal struggles and accomplishments have become my testimony that directs people to Christ and redemption.
Launching a church can be tough, especially when it’s your first time. Lots of people share the gospel, but I challenge myself to have a different approach and presentation. I transparently share what I have been through so that when the messages are heard everyone understands that the same grace offered to me is available for them. Creativity, personal passion, and delivery are all major aspects that cater Cornerstone to the audience that is compelled by the message.
There have been a few setbacks along the way, but I have learned that you can never compromise the standard. If you settle for mediocre your presentation will never match your expectations.
Some other important lessons I have learned along the way are:
1). Drown out the distractions and focus!
2). Discipline is necessary and sacrifice is a must
3). Never become addicted to the cheers of the crowd.
4). Be kind to everyone, we are all in need of kind words and acts of kindness.
The world should know that Cornerstone Fellowship is not a museum for the saints, but a recovery room for those that are hurting. The focus is not on me and my life, but the redemptive message and Savior that brought me to this point. All are welcome at Cornerstone, and through love we will direct the masses to the one who can make the difference.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If friends are visiting the Lowcountry our first stop for dinner would be Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar. They have a variety of burgers and salads it’s a favorite of the locals! No meal there is complete without an order of the onion rings.
Everyone loves a great burrito, and Dashi is a must! They serve the best burritos and the Sriracha Holllandaise sauce takes it to the next level! Keep your eyes open because you may spot their food truck around town too!
The Gullah community is prominent is Charleston, so no visit is complete without a visit to the Old Slave Mart Museum. The antebellum slave auction gallery was once housed there. Charleston natives are very welcoming and will make you feel right at home.
Make time to visit the Angel Oak Tree as well. This tree is over 60 feet tall, and over 400 years old! It’s amazing to see, and makes a great spot for pictures.
Make sure you reach out to Johanna’s Singleton for some great shots to commemorate your time in the Low Country. He’s mobile, goes above and beyond, and has excellent people skills. He captures moments perfectly!
Mother Emanuel AME Church has now gained even more historical significance, and the welcoming atmosphere can still be felt. It’s surely worth a visit.
You are on the coast, so a visit to the beach at Isle of Palms is worthwhile. While there grab a bite to eat at Coconut Joe’s Beach Grill.
If you are visiting after August, you must have a worship experience as Cornerstone Fellowship in Summerville. Service begins at 9am, and the experience will be one you won’t soon forget!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
When I think about the success of Cornerstone Fellowship, the first things that comes to mind are my family and friends. The support of both family and friends has been immeasurable. They support me by assisting with podcasts, joining prayer calls, tuning in for Bible Study, and offering constant encouragement and prayer. I am especially thankful for the founding members Sudie Heyward, my wife, and Timothy James, my cousin. Along with a host of other family members and friends, they have been my support system!
I am the product of a praying grandmother, and as this journey continues to unfold I know God is real and He heard the prayers of Queen Esther Thompson, my late grandmother. She always took me to church and taught me not to be embarrassed to pray publicly and share my faith. She only had a sixth grade education, but she possessed more wisdom and faith than anyone could imagine.
Deacon Isaac Heyward, Sr was my grandfather and he always encouraged me to dream big. He made time to listen to my stories and applaud my accomplishments. He was one of my first best friends and I still recall some of our conversations verbatim. I wish he was here to witness this point in my life.
Apostle Mark Badger, Power and Praise Ministries, is my spiritual father and his prayers and direction on this journey have been paramount. We met when I was sixteen, and life took me far away, but the words he prophetically spoke over my life are coming to pass. His willingness to mentor me and assist with the establishment of Cornerstone Fellowship will never be forgotten.
