We had the good fortune of connecting with Nichelle Mohammed and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nichelle Mohammed, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The idea of starting my own business stemmed from my desire to earn a living doing what I love. I craved the autonomy to choose whom I interact with daily, rather than facing various attitudes at a traditional workplace. During my early adulthood, I held multiple jobs, but none brought me true satisfaction. I often found myself leaving positions after just one week because I refused to tolerate situations or people that compromised my peace of mind and happiness. I’m a hairstylist from Brooklyn, and I specialize in traditional sew-ins. Styling hair isn’t just a job for me; it’s my passion. Seeing the happiness in someone’s eyes when they see their new look brings me so much satisfaction. I’m grateful to not only create beautiful hairstyles but also to earn the trust of my clients and make a positive impact on their lives. Spending time with my clients allows me to build connections and provide support beyond just styling hair. It’s about building real relationships with amazing people that bring me joy. Helping people feel beautiful inside and out is incredibly rewarding, and it fills my heart with happiness.
What should our readers know about your business?
As a beautician, my work goes beyond just appointments; it’s about creating a comfortable and enjoyable experience for clients. What makes my services special is my genuine dedication to understanding each client’s beauty needs, ensuring they leave feeling confident and satisfied.
I’m most proud of the connections I’ve built with my clients. Their trust and happiness mean the world to me, and I’m excited about the continuous growth and improvement of my business.
Starting out in the beauty industry wasn’t easy. I faced tough competition and encountered various challenges along the way. However, I remained determined and learned valuable lessons from each hurdle.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the power of resilience and adaptability. Every setback has taught me something new and helped me become a better beautician.
I want people to know that my passion for beauty extends beyond the salon. Whether it’s at a client’s home or elsewhere, I strive to provide exceptional service and empower individuals to embrace their beauty with confidence.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Normally, when my friends come to New York, we love to visit some of my favorite spots. These include “AriapitaNyc” “Bellyful,” “Pitch,” and “Lechaibk” all located in Brooklyn, as well as Liquid Lounge in Queens.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I have strong faith in God, who has never let me down. I believe in myself because God always reminds me that I can achieve anything I set my mind to.
My mother’s sacrifices during our migration to America resonate deeply with me. Witnessing her work multiple jobs to provide for us motivates me to strive harder. I aspire to one day gift her with a home or travel adventures, as she loves traveling.
My family members are my pillars of support, always encouraging and proud of my endeavors. Their unwavering belief in me fuels my determination.
My friends my who are my biggest supporters always lift me up, even when I doubt myself. If it was up to them they make me believe I can build Rome in one day. Last and foremost I can’t overlook the strangers who, despite not knowing me personally, are quick to share how I’ve inspired them. which motivates me to keep going.
Oh yea and myself for always striving to be better than I was yesterday.
