We had the good fortune of connecting with Nautica Houston and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nautica, how do you think about risk?
I feel as though, taking risk requires faith! You have to already believe the outcome is in your favor. My risk taking experience began when I quit my full time government job to pursue my career as a full time licensed stylist. I had no clue how I would make it work, I lived on my own, didn’t have a full clientele, luckily I was still under health care benefits with my parents I just knew I wanted out of working for someone else so I made it my duty to make myself my own boss.
What should our readers know about your business?
Pretty Lush Hair Co. Was started in 2017. Although I began doing hair at a early age and licensed at 17, I never really knew what I wanted to name my business or honestly never really branded myself until 2017 after learning that branding plays a big role as a legitimate business owner. My career as a licensed cosmetologist started my junior year of high school 2011, as a child I always knew hair was my passion, from my dad being a barbershop owner and my grandmother being a retired beautician, hair was honestly all knew I wanted to do. It started with my friends and younger cousins being my “guinea pigs”. After high school I received my licensed and I decided I wanted to give college a try. From my dorm freshman year to being a stylist in the on campus salon, I kept hair under my belt. I began to build my clientele and invest and perfect my craft. At the time I was an all around hairstylist, the girls could come to me for just about everything, braids, extensions, natural hairstyles.. you name it, I could do it. But that got tiring, the summer of 2017 I decided I wanted to take my craft and business more seriously. I began to tailor my services to evolve around strictly weave extensions and natural hair care. As I began to grow I also began to make major investments into taking classes to perfect the things I loved doing the most such as the trendy lace frontals. I took serval classes because I wanted to master the art, I’m an educator so learning is essential to me, you never stop learning especially in this industry because the trends are consistently changing and in order to stay hip and never fade you have to be ready to learn something new. In 2018 I made it up in my mind that I wanted to step out on faith and go full time with my hair care professional career, I had no clue how it would work, at first my parents weren’t fully supportive but I made sure I had a plan and I stuck to it. My main goal was for them to believe in me because I knew I could do it. In 2021 I decided to take the initiative to become a licensed instructor, after realizing how much I love to educate, I love to mentor and how much other stylist and people love and are inspired by me as a stylist, I wanted to learn how I could pour my knowledge and wisdom into someone else’s life. What sets me apart from others ? My professionalism for sure, my genuine and comforting spirit. My goal as a stylist is to provide a top tier luxury experiences, build confidence levels and make every encounter unforgettable. It’s rare in this day In time , especially my age that you find stylist like myself, I consider myself to be a full service and treatment based stylist. My salon environments are always comfortable and elegant no matter where I have worked. That’s what draws clients to me and that’s what helps me keep them.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A weekend in the city for the girls and I, would be brunch at BQE, the selfie museum to add a little fun, definitely can’t forget dinner let’s get dolled up and enjoy a luxury meal at STK, leaving there we are going end our night lit, we love a nice hookah lounge, like Cru, maybe even hit up Peter St downtown and bar hop, we give pretty girl lit vibes every where we go.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes to my village, but first God. There is no way I would be in my current position without thanking and giving all credit to God. Secondly my family, the amount of support, the amount of believing in me more than I once believed in myself is beyond what words can express. It’s not just one person, it’s honestly all family and friends. They push me to go and grow. I truly appreciate each of them.
