We had the good fortune of connecting with Naomi Yaledah-Bashaar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Naomi, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
This is a very good question. It’s a question I find myself thinking about a lot, especially these past few months. I won’t act like I haven’t struggled. I have definitely struggled with quite a few things; staying motivated, not accepting no’s and pushing through the feeling of defeat, to name a few. But I have a strong support system and I’m constantly told that my hard work will pay off and to continue to trust in God. God never gives you more than you can handle. He also never says no; he says, “Not right now, you’re not ready or nah I got something better for you!” So when I feel like giving up I always remember that and during the time I don’t remember my support system makes sure to remind me!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Khyel Kosmetics is a black woman owned cosmetics brand, named after my niece Sarai Khyel. I think what sets us apart from other businesses is our branding, which is going to be upgraded/enhanced very soon. I’d say I’m definitely proud of the growth thus far! Starting out, I was selling a few different lipglosses but now I’ve expanded to lip scrubs and mink lashes. I’ve also taken steps to expand my business and brand by getting my lash tech certification! I’m excited for bringing a new and improved Khyel Kosmetics to life. Challenges I’ve faced would be not getting discouraged and at times not being able to execute my ideas how I’d like to. I think the biggest lesson I’ve learned is to not compare my journey to others’, stay in my lane and be okay with my progress no matter how big or small!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d probably take my best friend to all the Atlanta staples! Cascade, Ponce City Market, the Atlanta Belt line, Slutty Vegan, art museums, Zoo Atlanta, Georgia Aquarium, etc. I think your experience anywhere is what you make it and you determine how much fun you really have!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The Most High deserves all the glory, praise and credit for sure. I wouldn’t be where I am today without his love, grace, guidance and protection. Aside from him, I’d like to make a special shout out to my support system. My boyfriend and his family are 1000% behind me with any and everything I choose to do. They continuously encourage and uplift me and for that I’ll forever be grateful. My roommate, Shykema is one of the most supportive friends anyone could ask for! She’s my live mannequin! Shy let’s me practice on her and even bought me a mini lash fan for when I start taking clients! She’s truly the best and I’m grateful for her as well! Keep an eye out for her name too! New nail tech coming soon!
