We had the good fortune of connecting with Naomi James and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Naomi, why did you pursue a creative career?
I prefer to say it chose me. My parents realized at a very young age that I was an expressive person, so they enrolled me in dance. I fell in love with dance because the stage felt like home. Dance allowed me to express myself, it kept me out of trouble, and it kept me focused. I did not care about being seen, rather I cared about feeling purposeful in life. This artistic direction has taken me down the path of teaching and choreography in both dance and fitness. To be able to teach, train and witness growth in myself and others is highly fulfilling, and fuels me to keep going!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a graduate of Bodywork Company Dance Studios in Cambridge, UK where I earned a Level 6 (Bachelor) Degree in Dance. From a very young age, I always wanted to perform. Once I started college, I was given the opportunity to teach after my lessons there. This was a huge eye opener for me. I knew this was what I wanted to do after my professional work. I did not know when this would be, but I knew my time was going to eventually come.

I have to say that I am extremely proud of myself for pushing forward along my journey. My biggest hurdle was moving to America in 2010. I lost myself trying to find my footing. But after taking some time off, changing my surroundings and remembering why I started and what I came here for, I started to see all the beautiful gifts God continues to bless me with. I have not yet hit my highest heights, but I am definitely on the right path.

I have learned a lot throughout my career—continuing mastering self, sticking to my foundations, and making what needs to happen, happen.

When it comes to my brand, we stick to these 3 elements: Confidence, Classy and Empowerment. No matter the table, there is a seat for everyone.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have been here for over 10 years, and I still have a lot of exploring to do myself. I love trails, so I would take them to a couple I enjoy—Tallulah Falls, Island Ford, Chattahoochee River Trail and many more. I am not in the city that much but when it comes to food, we would explore the city together enjoying local foods and festivals. This is something I would only do when I have people in town. I’m afraid my friend would know just as much about local Atlanta hangouts as I do. I guess you can say I need to get out more, ha!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

100% my father—Michael James. Talk about tough love. My father is very assertive and direct, all whilst being calm in his demeanor. These are areas where I have been weak in the past, but all characteristics necessary on my creative path. My father instilled these things in me. All I had to do was recognize I already had these qualities within me and actualize them.

Through his love, support and constant encouragement, my dad has provided the rich foundation essential to my growth. For this, he deserves all the recognition.
