We had the good fortune of connecting with MRK SX and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi MRK, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from Detroit, Michigan. I’d say that watching my grandmother hustle was the biggest influence on me. She’d have us going door to door in the neighborhood taking orders for rib and chicken dinners on weekends. Afterwards, we’d take them to her, load up boxes and make deliveries. I was painting houses, remodeling churches, wallpapering bathrooms and learning landscaping when I was 12. She taught me hard work. She taught me what it felt like to do the most mundane tasks in order to accomplish a goal. I’m still like that today. I’ll still take on a huge task, plan it out, and execute it without even considering help.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
People that encounter me, or listen to my music would have to tell you what sets me apart. I’m not pretentious enough to answer that question. I’m an artist, attempting to express my humanity to the listener in the clearest way I can conceive at every moment. My journey in music has only been complicated by my misunderstandings and immaturity. I have often placed too much faith in other people, without recognizing that their agendas, needed to be satisfied in order to continue helping me. I’ve often hurt myself, by listening to the victim mentality in my own head. I’ve learned that I am not a victim, and never have been. I’ve learned that the majority of mountains that I’ve had to climb were all created by my inexperience with the world. True, I have always been talented, and have always worked hard, but I’ve also been unrealistic about how I’ve wanted the world to respond to that. Therefore, via my brand NRMLZ GRWTH, I am hoping to communicate presence.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d take them to Cabbage Town, Piedmont Park, The Battery, Atlantic Station, The Aquarium, and then we’d cap it off with climbing Stone Mountain.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to acknowledge an artist I worked with many years ago while I was living in Tokyo, Japan. The artists name is Zeebra. He was the first major label artist that I’d ever worked with. He introduced me to what a life as a professional musician could be for me. He made a decision to give me an opportunity, and that’s exactly what he did. I’m not aware of a time that he did that prior to, or after me. I saw my face on big screens, and my name written in places that could be undeniably seen. He was the first to tell me, and show me that I had “potential”.
