We had the good fortune of connecting with Moya Campbell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Moya, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
It is difficult to identify the most important lesson. My business and the journey of growng my firm has taught me so much about humility, patience and the need for strong resilience. These three qualities I realize need to radiate through all areas of my life. Some of the best lessons have been from the mistakes made and I jokingly tell new entrepreneurs that I can’t tell them what to do, but I can tell them what not to do.

What should our readers know about your business?
My firm is a financial planning firm but we are much different than what first comes to mind. We specialize in retirement planning which involves much more than money. Insurance, income, healthcare and legacies are just a few other areas that we cover. We have built our practice on relationships. Every person that walks in our door is treated as family as we are a family business. We want their back story, when giving advice on a person’s livelihood, it is imperative to understand who they are and what they want to accomplish. We understand that at the end of the day, people want peace of mind, they want easy interactions, they want the best deal, and they want it to be fun is possible. I can say that is exactly what we deliver. It has not been easy. Many challenges have been overcome by resilience and dedication. The biggest teacher is experience especially in my business. Working with so many different people from all walks of life, from all over the country and so many different companies; I have had to learn how their plans and financials work. I have also learned to be very adaptable so I can put a person at ease or have a difficult conversation with family members. The most important lesson is I will never know enough. When I think I have seen it all, someone walks in with something unheard of and we dig in to learn and find a solution. Financial planning doesn’t have to be difficult and daunting. We show our clients that with our help we will keep it light and make sure they are taken care of. I am not looking to make transactions, I am looking to really make a difference in someone’s life. They have worked all their lives accumulating, saving and now it is their turn to simply enjoy life. With a financial partner like Lighthouse Financial Group, this is exactly what they can do and on their own terms,

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I grew up on Tybee Island so that would be one of the first spots, sit on the beach by the pier, check out the Lighthouse and grab lunch at North Beach Grill dinner at Bubba Gumbo’s for the absolute best sunset
hang out late night at Hucapoo’s and hopefully see live music
late night wings are the best at The Quarter

Downtown Savannah is beautiful with many places and things to do.
Breakfast at Little Duck Diner
Walk around the historic district visiting all of the squares and people watching.
Fav dinner restaurants:
Vic’s on the River
Common on Broughton

Go to the many rooftop bars – Top Deck, Sorry Charlies, The Peregrin, The Grove and stay here for live music and then a fun DJ

Drive through Bonaventure Cemetary

I love Savannah because it has so much to offer everyone so this is a hard question. I always tell people that when it comes to food, entertainment and nightlife, everyone is satisfied. There are options for all cultures at all different price points and live music is always fun.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother has been my mentor for the last 15 years, well really that last 40! haha She went on a whim and started our firm, then in 2007 she asked me to join her. Everyone thought we were crazy, I was a 25 year old woman with babies and no guarantees, but it worked. We recently just celebrated our 15 year anniversary together of growing our firm and I wrote these words about it..

“I’m so grateful to be able to work alongside my mother and not only be mentored by her, but also being able to grow and develop with her. Wendy (my mother and business partner) you drive me crazy at times the same way I do you! I know I can be a handful and a bit of a brat but there is not anyone else I would choose to build this legacy and ride this ride with. Thank you, thank you, thank you for taking the leap to start this firm and then the next leap 15 years ago when you convinced me to come back to Savannah to work with you. Everyone thought we were crazy! You knew better and I simply trusted you! I’m glad we bet on each other. You recently gave me one of the best compliments and you may not even know it. I asked you about my greatest strength along with others. Everyone else said similar things that humbled me and I loved, but you simply said one word – resilience. I’ve always thought you were the most resilient, strong woman I know, nothing can break you….to know you see the same in me, means so much and it comes from you!

In 2007, I met a woman named Ellie who became one of my clients. Other than my mother, she became one of the closest women in my life when it came to guiding me professionally. She also became an amazing friend and supporter in so many ways. Unfortunately she passed away in 2019, but I am forever grateful to my business because without it, I am not sure if Ellie and I would have ever crossed paths,
