Meet Morgan Mikell | Part-time Barker & Owner of Morgan’s Dream Desserts

We had the good fortune of connecting with Morgan Mikell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Morgan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Baking has always been one of my many hobbies. My parents bought me my first Easy-Bake Oven when I was eight years old. I started baking in the kitchen with my mother when I was ten years old; I would love to bake cakes and cupcakes for my family on the holidays. My favorite cake flavor to bake was Strawberry which is now one of my most popular cake pop flavors. The first time I made cake pops were for my best friend’s birthday party in 2017. She knew I loved to bake and that I could make them for her with no problem. The Cookies & Crème cake pops turned out great! So much so that one of her party guests asked me to make some for her birthday that next week. That was the first time that I had got paid for my desserts. Over the years, my passion for baking continued to grow but only as a hobby. My dream was to one day open my own bakery selling custom desserts. But I never thought this dream would become a reality. In April of 2021, I finally decided to start my dessert business and call it “Morgan’s Dream Desserts”. I am amazed that in five short months, my business has really taken off.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the owner of Morgan Dream Desserts. I specialize in making homemade cake pops and custom desserts. Cake Pops are a form of cake styled as a lollipop. I have six standard flavors (Strawberry, Chocolate, Vanilla, Yellow, Red Velvet, and Lemon) and six specialty flavors (Chocolate Peanut Butter, Strawberry Shortcake, Cookies & Crème, Birthday Cake, Butter Pecan, and S’mores). My most popular cake pop flavors are Strawberry, Red Velvet, Butter Pecan, and Cookies & Crème. I also make custom desserts like chocolate-covered strawberries, specialty strawberries, chocolate-covered Oreos, chocolate-covered pretzels, mini heart shaped cake pops, and Breakable Hearts. Each order that I make is a new opportunity to improve my skills and show the world what I can do. I got to where I am today through hard work and dedication to my craft. I believe what sets me apart from others is that I am a one-woman show, from the designing and baking of my cake pops to my business as a whole.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A couple of my favorite places in Atlanta are: Grindhouse Killer Burgers, Ponce City Market, Hotel Clermont, Grana, SkyLounge, Piedmont Park, The Vortex, The Battery, Atlantic Station, The Yard Milkshake Bar, Puttshack, Painted Pin, STK Steakhouse, Two Urban Licks, and the Botanical Gardens.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am so grateful for my friends and family that support and encourage me every day. From giving me new ideas and business advice to posting my work on social media. Without them none of this would even be possible. I would like to especially thank my parents for always encouraging my baking dreams.
