We had the good fortune of connecting with Morgan Kamau and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Morgan, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started running competitively my freshman year of high school and had the opportunity to compete D1 at University of Georgia. Over the years, I witnessed and experienced a lot of running related injuries that were somewhat mismanaged. In college we had incredible athletic trainers but they can only do so much when there are 8 athletes all coming in at once for help. And unless your MD has a background in working with runners, the prescription is always the same: just stop running.

My vision behind creating Tempo Physical Therapy & Performance was to change the narrative surrounding running sports medicine. I am really blessed to be able to blend my athletic, coaching and academic background to provide a unique experience for runners in the metro Atlanta area. At Tempo, runners can feel empowered throughout the rehab process without sacrificing their running goals. After a few years of being frustrated working in different models of physical therapy clinics, I decided that it was finally time to take the leap of faith in creating what I wish that I had during my running career!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Tempo PT is definitely not your typical physical therapy clinic and patients feel that immediately when they come in. Most people are used to busy clinics with overworked clinicians but at Tempo, you’re seeing your PT 1-on-1 which is already a huge difference from the norm. Another unique aspect of Tempo is that patients can trust that their provider is a runner themself. We understand the demands of the sport, the unique injuries and the passion of its athletes. That is something that I take a lot of pride in, the fact that I am creating a culture of runners helping runners.

My business is still very young but I was blessed to have really great mentorship from a mastermind group (PT Biz) early in the process which I think made a huge difference. My dad also spent years as an entrepreneur and is always giving me different things to think about which is always helpful. It definitely has not been an extremely easy road but I truly have enjoyed every step and feel very thankful for where I am. A big thing that I have learned is to just stay in my lane and keep doing the little things well. It’s tough when you’re not seeing the results instantly but over time, it’s always worth it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am probably the worst person to ask this question to because I am quite the homebody. I would probably take them to the Battery since I live very close to there, walk around a bit and grab some food. After that, I would most likely give them a list of ideas around the city and send them on their way haha. Most of my friends that come visit me know that I may be a great host but I am not a strong tour guide.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, I will shoutout my mom. She passed away earlier this year but ever since I was a very young kid, she preached about the importance of finding something that makes you happy. She was a tax accountant and hated every second of it! So when I was starting to feel unhappy in my career, I knew that I needed to make a change. And she was extremely proud that I did!

I also want to shoutout the rest of my family and definitely my #1 supporter, my husband. His optimism and unwavering belief in me was the biggest encouragement for me to start my business. He didn’t even bat an eye when I told him my plan and continues to believe in me every step of the way.
