We had the good fortune of connecting with Mookie G and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mookie, why did you pursue a creative career?
In December of 2017 my mother and I had a long conversation about me changing careers. Some how we got to talking about me becoming a standup comic. At the end of the conversation she was signing me up for the Jeff Justice Comedy Workshop and here I am now. Shoutout to Tommie Gauthia. Hey ma!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My comedy is based on my life and how I handle or wish I could handle life. I’m most proud of the fact the I’m balancing family, comedy, a full time job in education, and comedy. Surprisingly, with all of that nothing has fallen apart yet. I am where I am today because of support, planning, and consistency. This process is not easy. I have to keep a routine as much as possible so I can write and develop jokes. Protecting my happiness has turned out to be one of the most important lessons I’ve learned as a standup comic. I’m excited for the world to experience my comedy and I hope everyone enjoys my humor.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If you want to hang with me for a week around merto Atlanta please plan on being busy, laughing, dancing, and enjoying great live music. On Monday night we will hangout in Marietta Square at McCracken’s for food drinks and open mic night with Melo Black. On Tuesday night we are going out with Joe Smith at Limerick Junction for a comedy showcase and cheap drinks. Wednesday evening we head to Roswell and enjoy some drinks socializing at Pinkies Up Beer & Wine. Thursday night we listen to live music at Northside Tavern. On Friday night we turn up hard and dance the night away at Johnny’s Hideaway. Saturday we sleep a little late but once we get moving we hike up or around Kennesaw or Stone Mountain. That night we start at Old Vinings Inn for dinner (I’ll be having the delicious fried chicken) and live music. After dinner we end our Saturday night with laughter at Punchline Comedy Club or Laughing Skull Lounge.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to thank my wife and daughter for allowing me time to be out late at night to bring laughter to others. Fellow comedians Erica, Christin, Ty, and Maria for helping me with jokes and shows. And most of all I want to thank everyone that laughs at my jokes.
