We had the good fortune of connecting with Montrell Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Montrell, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
For me, the most important decision I have made that contributed to me being in business was believing in myself To show up for me and to give myself a chance. Greatness, or the desire to be great starts with you first before you can adequately exhibit that to the world. What inspires me, is my genuine love and admiration of art. Expression, created thru color. Passion, channeled thru paint strokes. Love, envisioned thru life and it’s experiences.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art, is created from the experiences of living life out loud and with intention. Expressive medium art that encompasses vivid colors, passionate compositions and all of life’s most beautiful complexions that come together to create untold stories and blended conversations of life, love and purpose. Professionally, I am always looking and admiring ways to grow and learn more of the business side of art. Always aiming to advance my craft more in ways that continue to challenge me as a creative and cultivate me as a brand. I personally believe that nothing great comes without challenges and hardships. Being a Black artist has always been a pride and joy to exhibit out loud. So many of us go unnoticed, overlooked and overshadowed that we find ourselves lost within someone else’s version of our lives. What has helped me overcome many challenges, is being awake and aware of myself. Believing in my capacity and vision as an artist and creator and understanding my contribution to the world of art is my narrative to tell and to create.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have only been in Atlanta since 2017 and have unfortunately not had the open experience of going out as much into the city as I would like. One of my favorite spots is most definitely Fellini’s Pizza. My partner and I actually enjoy cooking at home and anyone who’s come to our home usually never wants to leave because of it. I am excited to explore more of this beautiful place and all of it’s complexity and beauty.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people that throughout my life have played major roles in me being who I am but in short, I would say my family have always been my biggest support system. Always recognizing my gift and my purpose beyond it. Close friends, of course that genuinely encourage me daily to be great and to go after my goals with intention. Last but not least, my partner has been a major influence to me and he continues to push, promote and encourage me to keep going and to keep believing in my purpose. Collectively, I am able to be, because of those whom have poured their love, encouragement and belief in me.
