We had the good fortune of connecting with Monique Shine and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monique, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I feel that if you want to be successful, especially when going into business for yourself risk taking is inevitable. You have to spend money to make money, if you’re not willing to take a leap of faith for yourself entrepreneurship may not be the life for you. I’m willing to take any risk to possibly be successful, and if it doesn’t work out I’ll learn and grow from that experience and come back even harder. Taking risk has played a huge role on my journey in entrepreneurship. When starting my hair company I took on a huge risk and invested my own money into my business, but even though I took that risk I’m also putting action and intention behind my craft to make sure that my business continues to blossom and grow.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My business offers a variety services dealing with hair extensions. We offer wig construction, wig and bundle washing, wig styling, wig and bundle coloring services, and wig installs. We also have bundles on hand, and our customers are able to purchase pre-made wigs and or bundles in which they can choose from 13 different textures up to the length of 40 inches. This sets us apart from other brands because we are a one stop shop, and can fulfill all of our clients needs when it comes to wigs or hair extensions. I got where I am today by doing my own hair. Starting out wasn’t an easy process, because I had to take time to learn different skills dealing with extensions as well as perfect those skills. I also had to do a lot of work to brand my business with business cards, social media, a website, and find a great whole seller to purchase my products from to meet my clients needs. I overcame all of these challenges by staying organized and taking my time to learn and educate myself about being a business owner. It took me around six months or more before I launched so I could make sure that I was going to give my best to all of my future clientele. During my journey I have learned to be patient and consistent with my brand. You might have slow days, but when you are consistent you will eventually be booked and busy. The definition of monopoly is having exclusive possession or control of the supply of or trade in a commodity or service. This definition is where my branding came from. We are truly a one stop shop when it comes to any wig or hair extensions needs, and I want the world to know that my brand is slowly but surely going to reach the top. I am from a small town in southern Illinois. I moved to Alabama in 2016 to attend the university of Alabama at Birmingham. I graduated in the spring of 2020 with my bachelors of science in biology with a double minor in chemistry and forensic science. I worked in my field for a little over a year and hated it. I quickly figured out that I needed more out of life and didn’t want to work for anyone but myself ever again. From that point on, I started working to get my business up and running, and plan on owning a few more in the future. Anything is possible and the sky is the limit.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shout out to all of my clients and customers that have supported me from the beginning and who still support me. I also want to give a shout out to my family, because they are also my biggest supporters and have helped me grow my business whole heartedly without asking for discounts or free labor. I am truly grateful that all of these people believe in my skills and repost my business on social media platforms to help my business reach different audiences.
